LAST EDITED ON Jun-21-16 AT 11:15AM (MST)[p]Hey Brian... you thought my 4 PP weren't going to be enough to pull Region G....
You were wrong my friend and I'm glad you were.

Because you were wrong, it will cost you....1000$ OR the gps coordinates of that 200 inch muley that you have found. Ha!

Must be my lucky year. Drew deer and elk here at home (Wyoming) and a Nevada archery deer, plus a CO deer. I'm hopeful.

Best of luck to all.

Jim

I'm shocked that 4 points got you a tag, but that's cool. You've got the luck, you'll probably get a giant.

LAST EDITED ON Jun-21-16 AT 04:31PM (MST)[p]My brother in law drew a buck antelope on unit 58 and one of my co-workers drew a unit 7 bull elk. Couple those hunts with a cow bison hunt on the Henry Mountains in Utah with my sister in law and this could be a great year to help others in the family.

I will post these adventures my my hunting blog at www.dillonhoyt.com .

My two brothers and I drew region G tags, first time hunting deer in Wyoming for us. Going to be a fun experience that's for sure......Let the scouting begin!!

....two numbnuts I know drew unit 53 pronghorn tags......prolly piss them away yapping on the phone nonstop...well...one of them will.

Drew antelope. First time in five years this resident has drawn an any antelope tag. Failed on the extra cow/calf tag.

My son and I got drawn with 4 1/2 points in the special draw I really didn't think we had a chance but we are hunting in Wyoming this year and boy are we excited can't wait

The problem is WY doesn't have very good quality LE deer units and the odds are poor.
Region G isn't worth 5-6 points IMO. However, if you bought the points and want to use them, that maybe one of the better options.

I have 6 or 7 points and might cash in next year?

I'd sure have to argue that comment you made about Region G not being worth 5 or 6 PPs! From what I saw in just 4 short days of hunting there last year I don't know what more a person could want for a big area that holds a lot of truly nice bucks. If a guy puts in his time and especially is able to scout some there is absolutely no reason he shouldn't be able to kill a buck in the 170" class or better. Now if you're talking about someone going to any unit including Region G and having a good chance at a 190"-200" deer then I would agree with you because there aren't that many places anywhere that presents good odds at deer like that.

LAST EDITED ON Jun-23-16 AT 11:51AM (MST)[p]Top,
You shot a nice buck on a guided hunt. How many from your group shot bucks that were 185 or better?

Region G is steep. It's not for the average hunter who is out of shape. Residents can buy a tag every year. Most hunters can't afford a guided hunt.

I think to be successful, you need to scout, be able to shoot long shots 400-500 yards. Be able to pack and hike well or have horses. Then get lucky. I agree you should be able to find a 170 type buck.

A trophy buck is in the eye of the beholder. I was really happy with my 170 type buck in region G 25 years ago.

Most top LE units should produce a decent chance at a 180 plus buck. I'm not an expert, but from what I have researched and hunted in WY. There are no LE deer hunts that would give a non guided hunter a good chance at getting a shot at a buck over 180. Region G included.

There are some hard core hunters like Founder that see them every year. Not most hunters However.

There are LE units in CO, ID, UT,NV, that would give you a good chance of seeing 180 class bucks. There are some great genetics and hogs that come out of Wy, but not many in LE units.

Good point 50 I see hunters dropping ten to fifteen points on the Book Cliffs here in Ut. 90% of the deer are 140 150 class bucks. Id hunt WY anyday of the week over most of Utah le units.

A buddy and I spent 6 average points and drew G so we'll join the thousands strong bunch that will hunt that beautiful country this fall. This area has been on my bucket list for over 10 years so I'm really looking forward to a nice hunt. We opted for the special draw because we didn't want to take any chances and we wanted to hunt this year due to the recent mild weather. Good luck to all!
