2016 will be the first year I've hunted mule deer in Colorado. I drew a tag for unit 444 and was looking for advice on where to start hunting in that unit. I'm hunting the first bow season in late August through September. My plan is to start scouting the area Sept 7th and hunt the 9-12th. I'll be backpacking in to get away from the crowd and hopefully find a few bucks. Any help would be appreciated greatly.

I do have a friend that's guided that unit before but he did this in the early 2000's with moderate success.

Thanks

If at all possible I would be there for opening day. The later and later into September it gets the harder it is to find the bucks. Never hunted that unit. Good luck

Flatlander,

I would put the country that is north of Reudi Reservior on your list of areas to check out. That area won't be as crowded and you will be able to backpack in and at least see some good looking country. The west end of Red Mountain and Basalt Mountain have roads on top of them, so there will be more pressure there. I agree with DirtyTough, you should hunt it earlier. That unit sees a lot of archery pressure and those animals change because of that pressure. Good luck and enjoy!

Thank you for the advice. I will look at Google Earth and find that location and do some scouting from the computer for a while. Thanks again

Curious why if you are going to get there the 7th, you won't start hunting until the 9th. Tag should be good for the whole time.

Hunted this unit last year for 3rd season rifle. Was told that early bow season you can find a lot of deer up off of Red Table. There was a lot of good bucks down in the private ground so I'm sure they are up there. Good luck

Thank you for the information. I'm super excited to start my Muley adventure. Always wanted backpack in and get off the grid. It's almost impossible to do that in kansas.

Used to hunt there 3rd rifle for elk and deer quite a bit until 4-5 yrs ago. Hunted Red table mtn top to bottom. Always saw deer up high in summer scouting but there are roads across the top at the west end. Top of red table is at tree line but we always found them top to bottom. Saw a monster one morning scouting on top and there was a guy that used to be on here that shot a giant there that I met one season on the mtn. Used to be a better unit 15-20 yrs ago but they're there. Big and deep canyons so be prepared

I have always had better luck earlier on the bowhunt. Opening day is late in CO compared to some other states. The dates you say are tough with the Bucks stripping velvet and they tend to disappear. Also when the muzzy season is on they are more jumpy. So I would say the first week is best. The last week when the pressure backs off and they are hard horned would be better than muzzy.

Are you planning summer scouting trips?
