Very difficult to tell from that angle, we need him to look at the camera! I agree with Roadless Hunter, I am just not seeing much north of 170. Nice fronts though.

If that buck was just filmed......he'll be a lot better than 160's.

I agree!

There's always next year

his G-2's are about 13"s. How much bigger do you think they are going to get on that small frame? g-3 on the left doesn't even split tell around the 13" mark of the g-2. That deer isn't getting much bigger at all. I think he would be lucky to break 165" hard horned.

With two months of growing time......enough to put him north of 160's.

165 give or take a bit, with almost 2 months of growing left he could be a 180 class buck at the end.
I sure would be keep both eyes on him.

2 months of growing still means it's hard to determine. Because I've seen deer put on a lot of growth in the last month and I've seen some deer not grow much bigger.

Plus the video is short and the different angles to see are not there.
He looks pretty young so I would guess he won't break the 170 mark.
I think he needs at least one more year maybe even 2 to be a stud.

Everyone is just assuming that this deer was filmed this year. I will also say this. If he is this year, that buck is not going to grow for 2 more months. Most bucks that are say below the 170" mark are done putting on inches by say the middle of July to the end of July. That is my experience any way with the deer in the area I hunt. It is the deer that go over that 180" mark that still do more growing into and through most of August. You can tell by how his antlers at the tips are not black and bulbish that he is close if not completely done growing. I did the GENEROUS math on him and come up with 154". No way in IMO he puts on more then 5 more inches.

Ha....well, my experience may not be as much as yours, but I do measure them officially and have for quite some time now. As documented in my original post (in case you missed it) I stated that IF this buck is filmed this year he will be better than 160, IMO.

I have arrowed a few velvet bucks over the years in late August early September that I've scouted in mid to late June.....depending on location (geographically) MOST have added 2-5" in length on their 2's, 3's and 4's....some even more. But hey, maybe Brian will let the air out of him and we can view him afterwards. :)

Bohntr didn't mean to ruffle your feathers.... Just stating something that I think a lot of people miss when looking at deer and guessing what they will end up at. This is the way I look at it, (and I might be wrong, but over the last say 8 years I have a lot of data to back this up) As a general rule all deer start growing at about the same time. They all seem to grow at about the same rate of inches per day. At about mid to late July it seems that all the smaller (170" and lower) seem to be done, while the bigger bucks can really put on the inches that last few weeks.
All that being said, I would be very surprised to learn that this deer was even filmed this year. Not saying it is not possible, but it just seems very early for a deer to be "done" growing this early.
The two big reasons I think he is very close to being done are...
1. His left G-2 split so high... not many deer are going to grow much after that high of a split. For sure not on that size frame.
2. As I said above the antlers just don't look like they have a lot of blood pumping through them to me.
If you would let us know what you think he scores from this short clip. I think I am a little hi on my guess, but would like to know what you think.

Brian,

I'd just keep an eye on him. He has potential. Not gonna be a stud, but worth watching. I won't even guess not knowing the time of year the pic was taken and the quick look.

Tknez:

No ruffled feathers at all on my part. I guess I'm just used to Brian posting recent scouting videos over the years......so I was guessing it was a recent video. If it is, he'll be better than 160" when finished. If it's last years video taken in August, you're probably spot on!

I would guess him to be well south of 160 even after he finishes out. My rule of thumb for quick field judging is if the first fork is short of the ear tips he is less than 160. Obviously this is for an average type frame. If they have exceptional mass or exceptional deep forks, then that would be an exception but this buck is pretty average in his frame configuration.

Off-Hand, and from that angle I'd say he's going to be a 160" deer... That's a little guy for you... :)
