Henry Mountains Rifle Tag

Hey everybody! My father-in-law is the luckiest person in the world and drew the Henry Mountains rifle tag with just ONE point...yes you read that correctly, ONE point! Neither of us have ever been down to the Henry's and my father-in-law has never been much of a scouter so I am trying to gather as much info as I can and then convince him to do as many scouting trips as possible. Anybody have any advice as to where to start to get to know the area? My father-in-law is also worried about scouting at this time of year because he thinks it is too hot down there (compared to where we live in Northern Utah) and I can't seem to convince him that we need to be down there while bucks are in their summer patterns and not hanging out in super dense pines.

He drew one of the best deer tags in the world and he doesn't want to go scouting that's crazy. Let him do what he wants it's his tag! It's people like him that show up opening morning and shoot a 220" buck off the road.

Your FIL drew with 1 point and doesn't want to scout?
He'll probably kill a monster and show us all how it's done!

I'm headed down right now to the Paunsaugunt to scout for 4 days and it took 15 points to draw. I'll scout 3 separate trips not counting a couple days before the actual hunt because I have an idea what tag I have. I hope I end up with your FIL's luck DURING my hunt!

Tell him to get off his duff and take a ride down. That's how he'll get fired up for the hunt....when he sees a few Giants!

Good luck and congrats to him on the great drawing luck,
Zeke

Your FIL hit the lottery! Get down there and take advantage of this opportunity. This is a great time of year to glass big bucks in the velvet and to learn the area and roads. You FIL should have no problem finding and killing a nice buck but perhaps he should consider hiring a guide if he is not interested in scouting but still wants to make the most of a once in a lifetime opportunity. Good luck and post photos!

My first thought: Tell him to turn the tag in, it appears to be wasted on him.

Second thought: Don't have him put in for any LE hunts again as they will all be wasted on him.

Third thought: There's not really anything to the Henry's. There is only one road that "goes over it", you can find it easily on a map. Sounds like you will be hunting from the road. Luckily for you, it's the Henry's and your FIL will kill a good buck from the road. Look at camping at McMillan Springs on the West side, and then drive around in the mornings and evenings, just like anywhere else. The only difference is that you will see 180" bucks every time out, and an occasional bigger one than that. You will see them from the top of Mt Pennell all the way down to McMillan Springs where you are camped.

I wouldn't count on a 200" deer from the road though, but hey, that'd be quite the accomplishment. Good luck.

I know we won't be road hunting. Once we're down there my FIL likes to get down to business and hikes around like a billy goat and likes to be in the high country, it's just getting him down there now while the bucks are still growing that is the difficult part. I'm sure he'll eventually get the bug and head down in August. He knows the caliber of tag he has so once he's down there he'll be all in.
