We had hiked those slopes for four days, steeper than the back of your head. We had seen some bucks and had a lot of fun, but had not connected. It was rainy and dreary when we got up, and we were not quite dried out from the day before, so we decided to hunt the bottom out and back in.
What a thing to be looking along the creek bottom for a rumored spike to fill our last day tags,my son in law connected on a small forky (that we were happy to have), we gutted it out and went on hunting and this 91/2 yr old steps out at the wrong time. Fish and Game stopped as soon as we crossed the water with our truck, he said he thought he had shot the biggest buck up there; did not know about this one.
If you use the live weight formula net weight times 1.15 and add 5%, usually get a really close hoof weight. Net weight 239X1.17=279.63/.95=294.35 lbs. on the hoof.
He was such a pig we had a hard time dragging him down hill! (His body weight always wanted to head for deadfall instead of open grass)
Taxidermist aged him. He was weaker in the fronts because of age, but man, I love this buck. Darkest I have ever seen. Funny thing is, he tasted really good, also. Here it is 2016 and we still have not quite finished eating him.
One of my greatest joys is hunting. Especially Muley bucks. They don't just come running to a whistle, and are never on the same trail day after day. To me , they are the premium challenge big game in the lower 48. Yes, they are known for stopping and looking back, but you must FIND them first. I had worked the same job at that time for 10 years, and to think of him dropping as a fawn six months into my starting at this job,and every hunting season not making a mistake, and how many men had ever even actually laid eye on him. Pretty telling when the local Fish and Game who also lives in he area, and scouted hard to find his big buck, did not ever remember seeing or hearing about this mountain monarch.
So, I call the picture "two old men".
When you look at it, realize i am 6'1" and 270lbs. I have a 73 1/2" reach; but I look like squiggy behind this buck.
Hope you enjoy looking at him as much as I do.
Gun- .220 Swift with custom hand loaded 63 grain Sierra Game Point. (Gun cost me $200 1975 TS Ruger M77)
Glass- Kahles 10X42 binocs. (Gift from a customer)
Sponsor- NONE
Trail Cam- None used, this is fair chase only. I would just take my own pictures and quit killing (would not be hunting) if I needed technology to replace the rewarding hard work spot and stalk fair chase. Not judging anyone else, but I could not use them. I would vote for them to be outlawed when used to locate animals to kill.

Please, every forum has it's unhappy armchair sewing sisters who try to find ANYTHING wrong with a post...if you do not like my gun, or my looks, or the buck, or the live weight formula, PLEASE put down your quilt, stick your bony chin up in the air and go bother someone that likes to argue, because the success of this hunt is bigger than your opinion of it; and you cannot take away the joy I have to have been there to harvest my biggest buck so far.

Budget- $250 at the most.
Tactic- Good ol Boy counting on experience but most of all God's blessing on the hunt.
Guide- NONE are you kidding me? My son in law was the compadre who showed me this area, and was my back up and spotter.

I have a problem with your whole post. IT'S NOT ME SITTING THERE WITH THAT GREAT BUCK but I can still be happy for you.

Congrats on an awesome adventure and fine write-up. Thanks for sharing.

Tremendous buck and awesome first-post. I especially like the part about the sewing sisters. So true!

That is a big boy you put the whammy on. Any other pics that show more body size? Nonetheless, great buck.

That's a fine outcome on a tough hunting day Mr. laidback! A great memory that no doubt is now a family legend. Congrats, and thanks for sharing.

By the way, I have that very gun and probably bought it about the same year. Yes, I have also taken a few deer with it (Shhhhhh...don't tell DW!) but then bullet placement has always trumped size!

Thats a pig! I love a big bodied old mature buck. The big dark rack is amazing too. I love hunting mulies in Idaho. Congrats!

Look at the antler on HIS right, our left looking at him, there is a birth defect that caused his antler to grow from a lower and inside attitude. He would have been even wider if that antler was growing where it was supposed to be, but I would not trade him for anything!
