Here's one of the best I've looked at this year. Double cheaters off both sides. What would you guess be on size? Probably a dumb question, but is he a taker for ya?

That is a great buck now and will be even greater if he can get a year under his belt. I know he would be a hard one for anyone to pass up, even me, but this deer has the potential to be an absolute giant.

Glad you're having fun.

I also agree if you can let him go another year I bet he would be an absolute giant next year. Limited evidence that he is young but his face has the look of young deer.. Put him in the vault til next year

When did it become so fashionable to say "just wait, he'll be bigger next year"?

How do any of you KNOW how old that buck is with the brief glance here on MM?

I just shake my head sometimes!

I don't do it because its fashionable and I know its a gamble Zeke. But I try and make the best decisions I can for shooting mature bucks. Doesn't mean I don't make a mistake or two. Doesn't mean some other hunter or lion doesn't kill him and I never get my shot but There have been times that I have seen a buck get let go a year and the next year me or one of my friends kills him and it made a hellavu big difference. I have my eye on an antelope this year that a couple of my friends passed on that is a stomper this year. The more people that like the "let'em walk" fashion then there is a better chance he will make it to next year.

I have a friend that every year he kills the first eight point he sees. He has been doing it for 30 years. He has killed dozens of immature bucks that all look like they got stamped out with a cookie cutter and he still wonders why he has never shot a giant whitetail.

I agree with about everything in your last post. The issue I have is with folks thinking that unless a deer is 230" he's young. NOT all deer will grow a huge rack....although age, then genes, are the most important two factors.

You should know, more than most, that not every deer will EVER grow to me one of those monster muleys regardless of age and regardless of how "fashionable" it is for "some" to say they're just young deer.

I'm sure guys are right 63% of the time when they say the bucks are young but that's only because of odds that they're right and not because they can tell the deer's age from a 3" photo!

Just trying to keep you honest Tri,
Zeke

If that buck isn't at least 8 years old I would pass. It wouldn't be much of a challenge shooting him. Right City Boy?

No worries Zeke. If I wasn't honest I wouldn't have answered the way I did. Go back and read my other posts on Founder's threads. There is a specific very mature buck that probably won't break 190 that I think is the best buck he has shared with us. I don't just look for a deer to be 230 inches. I LIKE HUNTING OLD DEER. I feel bad when I kill a deer that I think could have been better with a little age on him. I have done that. I will probably make that mistake again. But I try not to. My favorite deer hunts are two types of hunts. Either I kill a really old buck or I kill a buck nobody knew about. Doesn't happen all the time but that is the game I like to play. For me it isn't just about killing something to make my buddies ooh and ahh. I can share a pic of a really good buck my brother and I passed on two years ago that is very similar to this deer we are looking at here. We passed on him thinking he was too young. We haven't seen him ever since. Maybe he was old enough then and we made a mistake. Maybe the coyotes ate him or disease. I'd make the same choice tomorrow.
