Scoring ?

Last year I killed a great buck, I decided to have him scored at one of those gun show/ scoring events. I had previously scored the deer multiple times. After seeing the score sheet I was like WTF! It was 12 inches lower than my lowest score I've ever scored on this deer. I watched the first half of the scoring and he completely ignored my eye guards which are 1", 1", and 1 1/4. Which also lost me an inch per side in mass (as I understand due to H1 and H2 taken at the narrowest point between the burr and g2) I know I'm going to take flak for this post, but has anyone ever had this happen? Even after the fact I've scored it and the same thing. I've used scotch tape and a straight edge to pen mark the start of the point, and used the boone and crockett app where you input data and it calculates it. Am I the crazy one or should I have it rescored ? I know score is just a number and it doesn't shrink the deer in my eyes but I'm just not understanding how I could be that far off.

I think at mass scoring events they hurry through them. Especially if they know from the start they won't qualify. I have taken several animals to our free measuring event in our town. We usually do it with a decent bull that will qualify for pope and young and decent bucks 170+ just for fun. I had picked up our bulls and was surprised at how far we were off. I have had them show me on our bulls where we went wrong. Some of what me showed me helped and we were off but a couple places he showed me where he measured to was the same point we did and they marked it shorter. On my deer he clearly has one eye guard longer then the other and they showed them as the same measurement. They also showed 2 cheaters that were different lengths as the same. And didn't even include another that was clearly 1 1/8. I don't really care to ever enter something in the books. We just do it for fun plus it is easier to give someone who hunts a idea of the size of your critter actually is rather then just referring to it as a 6point or a 25" buck.

Just ignore the score they gave the buck.
Don't think about it to much.
If you love the buck and the memories are all worth it.
It scores 242" in my eyes! :)
Have a good one!

You guys are exactly right. I did take one animal to the annual Bass Pro shops scoring event once and there's usually a line of people waiting for their animals to get scored. This scenario forces the measurer to speed things up and miss crucial bends.
I typically score up my animals super tight and take it to a local certified scorer, the numbers are virtually identical every time so I know that what I'm doing is correct.
I once scored my buddy's antelope with a 15.5 inch length, when he took that animal to Bass Pros for official scoring, they cam up with 14.5 inch on the length? What the #####?? I re-measured it and told him they ##### up.
Today, all I do is measure my animals myself and not enter it. I believe that I can score an animal with the best of them but it's not worth my time or money anymore to put it in the books.

Well at least I'm not totally crazy, for my big g3 he gave me 12 even and I get a very conservative 13 1/8. I could tell the guy was stressed with only a couple scorers and a couple dozen elk stacking up to be scored. I've tried pinning down an official scorer in the north idaho area and they all send me to one of the scoring/gun show events. Won't ever do that again. How is the eyeguard/browntine scored? Is it from the uphill side, downhill side, shortest side?

So heres the measurements i got.

Tip to tip = 11 3/8
Outside spread 23 3/4

Inside spread=19 4/8

RA LA
g1 1 2/8 0
g2 16 6/8 17
g3 13 1/8 12 4/8
g4 7 6/8 8 7/8

h1 5 7/8 4 7/8
h2 4 7/8 4 7/8
h3 4 2/8 4
h4 4 2/8 4 3/8

mb 24 3/8 22 4/8

+1 inch point on the right antler eyeguard

Admittedly he's all back forks but a little squatty up front.

Sorry if its hard to read the format it looked better when i typed it and everything got squeezed together when i posted, i come up with a clean 182, if anyone sees something i missed please let me know. In the lower picture you can see 2 pretty nasty divots in his skull from fighting. I watched him from a distance for a couple days just pushing other bucks around and he was with a couple bucks that i would say were solid 160s, my dad drew the tag this year and hopefully we can put him on one of those bucks. We Also saw a buck a week before season that was an absolute smoker 4 point and spotted an enormous buck about a half mile away across a canyon on land we cant hunt that i would say was 200 all day long. An atv drove by him at a hundred yards in the evening and he just bedded down for 10 minutes and got back up to feed when they were past him.

LAST EDITED ON Aug-04-16 AT 05:30PM (MST)[p]....I don't see a scorable G1 any where on that rack....??.....and you might recheck those H's....I just don't see 19" of mass per side.

...probably just a bad picture

Homer I respect your input and I know there are far better scorers than I on this site, Im trying to become better at scoring and your comment was something i expected. When I look at the picture i dont see the same buck as when its in my hands. I measured 19 1/4 and 18 1/8 for mass. The eyeguards are decieving because they go front to back on the deers right antler. I took pictures of measurements because I see exactly what your saying in the picture.

I don't even know where to begin....I'll let Homer handle. :)

I will say that 'most' folks that I have encountered over the years that claim they 'know' how to measure just as accurate as an OM......quite honestly, did not. But, I encourage everyone to learn the system, as best they can, and have fun measuring stuff. Just realize, most often an animal you measure will generally be different than that of a trained measurer. JMO.

Bohntr I am not claiming to be a pro at scoring by any means, I can count the bucks I have seriously sat down and scored on both hands. Most were mine, but the difference between what it was scored at officially and what i scored it at are so far off. I do my best to pull tight and one day i would like to break 180 and I did my best to be subjective in the measuring, it wont break my heart if this deer isnt what I scored it at. I just want to know the reason for the difference. Even 3 inches difference is big when your talking about eighths and 12 seems crazy. I feel like your implying something and I would just as soon not score deer 12 inches off for the rest of my life and if I ****** up somewhere I would like to know.

One thing that could make a significant difference is using a 1/4" steel tape to measure. Your tape appears wider and will not slide between some of those burrs like a steel tape. I also have one of those plastic-type tapes and use it sometimes. I know that a 13" antelope will measure about 14" with that plastic tape. Makes hunters happier when I use the plastic one. :) I think the tape is shrunk or the Chinese guy that made it didn't know an inch.

I used to care about score. Not so much any more. If you like it, shoot it. If not, let it grow. I really enjoy having fun hunting and scores seem to take some of the steam out of it for me.

Best of luck.

This is a very helpful tip,the guy I watched used string and then measured the sting on a ruler or yard stick. Thank you

B&C only allows a 1/4" steel tape for H measurements.....ring end or clip end.....ring end tapes are preferable since you overlap to zero.....when burning an inch or 2 on clip end it is too easy to forget to subtract what you burned.

B&C does allow the use of a 1/16" cable for length measurement and it does make it more accurate and usually an 1/8 or more in length is my experience.

Cables are Nice!

But I seem to get few More Inches with a Nice Stretchable String!:D

I'm Warning You!

If Homer Scores it for You,You'll Wish what Your Guide Told you was GOSPEL!
