Calling Mulies

Dose anyone have any experience with calling in mulies? I have never tried it before and was curious if it was effective. I do mostly spot and stock but was trying to come up with some new strategies.

Somewhat effective. Most any screechy distress coyote call can get deer to come take a look. Deer cannot have any indication you are there or they will go the other way. Typically your bigger buck are less interested than younger bucks and does

I have a Jack Rabbit call I use for coyote Ill give it a try and see what happens. I have two buck tags so ill try it on one and see if I can get some meat in the freezer. But I have a feeling it will be a coyote that will be coming in when I use it.

Thanks.

I believe back in the day probably 20 years ago Eastman's use to market a deer call and even had a movie about it. We bought one and tried with little to no success. It would make the deer stand up out of the thick oak if you blew it into a canyon.

Never tried calling but I carry a little spike shed in my pocket.

Had a nice buck waltz through a narrow shooting lane. Pulled out the shed and rattled it on my stock and 20 seconds later he had turned around and gave me a nice broadside...coincidence?

Something to try, many times when a deer is spooking or turning to run I have made a sound similar to a sheep baa. Is that how you spell baa? MM spellcheckers? Anyway three bucks have given into it long enough to get shot. Maybe a loud whistle would have worked, who knows. Search for 'mule deer sounds' and imitate it. Try it on some does that are spooking to experiment. Had a 20 inch 4 point in Wyoming come into 30 yards of a truck full of guys. My buddies couldn't believe it, it was his lucky day (opening day).

I have used the reed predator calls that are similar to a estrus elk call. Griped tighter than usual with teeth on reed to get a very high pitch and called in deer. During the rut have used a regular burping sustained grunt tube on bucks. Overall they are not as responsive to it as whitetails but it does work. RIP Lil Bro' "Huntnfever"

Pretty interesting thought. Its funny though. I build a hunting magazine and had a guy call in to place and Ad. Ironically it was an Ad for a Mule Deer Call. Its an old school call named "Deer talk" ~ The Deer Stopper developed by I believe Don Laubach and Gordon Eastman. He sent me a call and i started to watch the video but only have gotten half way through it. From what i saw it was pretty amazing. I plan on mastering this call using it and practicing on it year round. You can see it for yourself, but just thought i would share this information to anyone interested.

The call company is called Elk.inc and you can see them online along with real videos. They have a full youtube channel as well. The call comes with an instructional video. Its pretty old school but very cool to watch. Pretty nostalgic watching the late great Gordon Eastman! I like it

check them out and see for yourself.

I've used that particular call and try carry one in my pocket when hunting Muleys. Haven't called anything in but keep if for stopping a moving buck for a shot.

A mouth bleat like mentioned above probably works as well- mainly depends how spooked they are.

I blew a distress call on a ridge top with it one time and had a doe charge up the side after me until she realized I was a human.

I watched a show out of west texas a year ago. Late november, they'd set up just out of range/sight of the herd and use a fawn distress call. The does would get worried and come running straight at them and the bucks would follow the does. The TV sure made it look convincing!

I've used all kinds of calls. Deer, elk, coyote and my main goal has usually been to get a buck to stand up in his bed so we can whack him. For that purpose, nothing seems to work well. Patience is best. Don't think I've never had a buck just stand. With a mature buck, when he comes out of his bed, he's headed to another county at Mach 1 if you are sitting there blowing on a call. They'll look, swivel their head, but not stand up in their bed. And when they come out, it is an explosion.

I've had decent luck with does and fawns and young bucks. We don't get to hunt the rut, so maybe when the big guys are following does they respond differently. Stealth is often the best solution............

I watched a show similar to johnnys, they were hunting in November and it brought a big buck across the fence following some does after calling with a fawn in distress call

My buddies tried it last year during the rut with a primos doe in a can and had some success bring bucks in. Would be worth a shot.
