shot deer help

The curse continues with my big buck. Last year I shot him at 30 yards and i hit him in the shoulder when he ducked my arrow....he lived...fast forward to last night...35 yards feeding i let an arrow fly his direction. I watched the arrow bury into the crease behind the shoulder. He mule kicked and disappeared over the hill. He was slightly quartering more than i thought. (i never shoot quartering too shots). The arrow fell out 40 yards from the shot. blood up to the crest wrapping. i followed the blood trail for 150 yards. okay blood at first and started to become small droplets. I backed out got help and better flashlights and continued the search. We ended up bumping him in his bed and he was still alive (dark outside) and bounded towards another draw.

We backed out and will continue the search in an hour. I am baffled at what happened. I was sure i lunged him and he would be dead in 50 yards. I keep replaying the shot in my head and have no idea how he is not dead. Im a loss of words right now and sick to my stomach. I hope a full night he will expire and i will find him soon.

Any tips will be welcomed!!!!!

He left him over night tri. If you hit lungs, you will find him. Sometimes they can be tough. How long did you give him after the shot?

Never seen a lung hit critter last more than 5 minutes, double lunged, less than 1 minute. I'm guessin meat hit again.

Yes, this.

Yes, definitely give him time to expire before bumping him again.

LAST EDITED ON Sep-03-16 AT 12:00PM (MST)[p]Once again people being jerks we've all had a shot go wrong and couldn't find a deer this doesn't mean bow hunting s "not for him" keep at it give it time hope to see a post of u recovering him good luck don't give up

It's funny how easily people are offended when spokein to in a matter of factly manner. Tri-state may have a point. I wouldn't know muleyslayer if he was sitting in the table next to me. Seems like a nice enough guy from his posts I've read. Like tri, I've enjoyed his threads on this deer and admired his dedication to pursue this buck but the fact that this is the second year of the same story makes one wonder why it keeps happening. Wouldn't surprise me if muleyslayer is asking himself tri's question as he reflects on his history with this buck this am. A kid siding the building next to me shot his bow 3 times before season, has drawn blood twice so far, and you'll never guess where he is this mornin. Maybe muleyslayers that guy, doesn't strike me as that type but again I've never met him. Maybe he's the type that gets rattled that close to a buck like that, I don't know, but the fact that a pattern is developing here can't be denied. I hope muleyslayer gets it figured out as like I've said, he seems like a nice enough guy and when he says he's sick over the situation, I believe him. But somethins gotta change.

Do Not Bump them!

No!

I'm not Mad at You!

I Think the Buck has just about had enough of you!:D

keep at it I think if you are confident you hit him behind the shoulder on the on side you had to have hit one lung at least. If you bumped him he probably never stopped till he died. That is my experience with elk. I have been in your shoes with elk when a shot looks solid and just never is to be found. I thought long and hard about hanging it up and am glad I never made the choice to quit. What it did do was make me prepare more and be more patient. Sometimes it is just out of the hunters control and fluke things happen. Good luck! I will keep checking back for pics.

Kind of funny how a person can post on this site for advice about what they would do in my situation and get criticized for it. All I wanted to know was how long each person waits if they gut shot a deer (worst case scenario).

I strive to better myself every year as a hunter and an ethical one at that. I do practice religiously during the summer with my bow. I do not take marginal shots. I actually never would take a quartering too shot. When I released my arrow last night I was extremely confident that he was perfectly broadside to me AT 35 YARDS. As the arrow buried into him and he turned away. I was proven wrong and could tell he was quartering towards me more than i expected. Even tho he was quartering towards me a little I was 100% sure that my arrow hit the crease behind his shoulder. I waited 30 minutes and started my recovery process. My buddy and I were following his blood trail after dark and bumped him out of his bed?.obviously I did not hit him as well as I wanted. We backed out for the night and continued our search in the morning.
I will say one thing. I was spot on on my shot. I hit him in the crease behind the shoulder.

And I was using a rage broadhead.

.................and yes i did recover him.

No Criticization here!

Just Sayin the Buck Might be gettin Tired of You & Your Bow!:D

Glad to hear You recovered Him!

Alot of People/Hunters Give up way too Easy/Soon on recovery!

Which you did not do!

Nice Job!

Just learn to have patience. Been there done that when I was younger. Bumping them is tough. Good luck and be persistent and you should find him. Look for magpies

So now that he is recovered was the shot placement as you remembered? Did you hit the crease? Just curious not trying to be an ass. Glad you recovered.

Shoulda used a Rage!:D

(I Know You used a Rage!)

yes...shot was dead on in the crease behind shoulder!!!!

Congrats muleyslayer. You did well. If hunting was always easy and as we would like it, then everyone would be out doing it. You earned this buck. Congrats on the buck and some great memories

Congrats on the recovery. How much further did he travel. Was the meat and cape okay?

Hey Muleyslayer52, I just wanted to thank you for allowing us to experience your journey with this buck. It has been probably my favorite story on this site and am always looking forward to new info. regarding your buck. I have enjoyed the pics and videos and was heartbroken for you last year when you lost him. Then shared in your joy when he returned this year. I archery hunt as well and know how hard it is to get things to come together sometimes and that's why I hate the criticism you received in this post. This time of year with the heat the way it is, I am an advocate of short waiting periods after the shot if the hunter feels very confident about the shot like you did because if the animal dies right away like they sometimes do, I hate the thought of the animal sitting there rotting for hours in the 90 degree weather. Its a judgement call only the hunter can make. Congrats on accomplishing your goal! Look forward to more details about the hunt, and would love a complete account recording the details of the last few years. Good job!

a little taste of whats to come in a few days!!!

oh......and mass added up to be around 50"

Good job and way to stick with it. I think after you lose one you start to doubt if you will recover them. I'm glad he lived after last year and it was only fitting that you get another chance and are the one to harvest him. 50" of mass that is awesome that is comparable to a decent size bull elk. Congrats.

Look at that beam! It's as big around as your arm.

Need more pics, and the question about score on this buck is finally answered. C'mon...give up the goods! And did I mention...need more pics?

Congrats! But but but i thought lung shot animals ALL DIED WITHIN FIVE MINUTES?! Im not trying to take away from your post, cause it is awesome. Just dont like all of these judgmental people on here.

During the autopsy, what damage did you find ? Judging by the picture, doesn't look like lungs to me but obviously fatal . I think all archery hunters learn a lot during field dressing . Congratulations on a great deer .

The entrance was spot on for what i shot him for at 35 yards. As for what happened i have no idea. The arrow entered him in the 10 ring behind the shoulder and just about exited about 3" behind the last rib.

When i shot i was sure he was broadside to me. not quartering. The only thing i can think of is he turned towards me when i shot (he ducked my arrow last year at 30 yards). Thus making more of a quartering too shot.

Yes he expired but not quick enough for me! I hated that he was alive for as long as he was.

pix are on phone........................and hes bigger than most people guessed (I was low on score too!!)

LAST EDITED ON Sep-04-16 AT 10:31AM (MST)[p]Congrats on your success and good job for sticking with it.
Looks like a 200" buck to me.

There's not always next year

Good deal Buddy, glad you was able to finally get him with all the scouting and hunting you did. NICE buck

I would of been sick to my stomach as well!! Way to keep up the chase and not give up! Looks like a Dandy Buck and a memorible hunt for sure. Gut shot critters generally will not bleed and your shot looked good. The only thing I may have done different was to give him more time but if I was confident in my shot I probably would of tracked until I bumped him one time then backed out..Enjoyed your story and pictures over the Summer!! Congratulations!

What a pig! I love that mass. It sure has been fun following the story for the last year and a bit. Glad you got it done.

As far as your original question goes, my advice would be give any animal shot an hour unless you heard him crash or saw him expire. After that and following the blood trail if the blood trail is awesome the whole way then keep following but if the blood trail dies out at any point I like to give them more time. At least another hour or overnight if not confident. On your buck once you figured out that it was a quartering shot and possibly not a perfect shot plus the blood trail dying I would've waited a few hours or overnight if dark. I personally don't like to trail in the dark. If you do jump them in the dark it's basically a loss most the time. Congrats on your buck. He's amazing especially for a bow.

I'm behind you 100% Muleyslayer52. A guy can have everything perfect and still have things go different than intended. Clearly this worked out well for you and such an awesome buck. Whether you found this buck or not to say that you are doing something wrong is crazy. To get within range of this phenomenal buck itself is a feat!

That bucks an ABSOLUTE TANK!! Congrats Muleyslayer!!
im guessing 207" and change

As for your shot. I had the exact same thing happen to me last year. I watched my buck run out 40 yards and look back towards me, blood was gushing out and he stood there for a couple minutes staggered and almost when down, caught himself than darted off down hill.
I gave him 45 minutes then went and found my arrow complete pass through and started following the trail. got to where he had stopped and there was a 2' wide puddle of blood, bubbly so i knew i had hit lungs. Long story short my buck ended up going approx 3/4 mile and almost complete stopped bleeding only able to find a drop every 10-15'. finally found him expired in his bed 3 hrs later. shot was shot on the entrance side (clipped one lund) ended up hitting a rib and deflected out of his chest missing the second lung. They are tough animals and have an extreme will to live. they can go a lot further than you think they can.

Again congrats on your buck! can't wait to hear the story and see the field pics.
