It's on fire. 3000 acres burned so far and zero containment. Hope they get it out soon. Have the rifle tag this year.

It's a good thing it's burning... And there's a ton of area that is nowhere affecting prime deer country....

It's not a good thing if a guys just used max points on the unit and spent all summer scouting a buck of a lifetime and now the whole area is closed to access. I hope some of those guys have a back up plan.
In the long term, many fires like this are good for the range.

There's not always next year

I realize fire is good but this close to where the better hunting is and this close to the season is not good if the fire burns that entire range. It's super dry out there and not much chance of good feed growing again to keep them in the area.

The person can turn their tag back in for a Utah hunt. It's not the end of the world but it does suck. I had he same thing the year I hunted Vernon. There were still plenty of deer and it was a great hunt.

I know it would suck to have the tag and you had scouted a particular buck where the fire is, that would not be good... But I was near the unit all weekend and there is hundreds of thousands of acres not affected by this fire...

In the long run this is great for the unit...

I drew this tag as well and am having a hard time finding a draw tag Buck. I know no one wants to give up an area but I could really use some help.

Stop looking in the obvious places that 90% of the other guys go hunt and start looking in the out of the way unlikely spots if a giant is what you are after. Won't be easy.

Good luck. I live close by and you couldn't pay me to hunt that unit. There's always a few monsters out there, but they are needles in a haystack or live on private. Similar to the book cliffs, it's not managed for trophy quality. If you have a nice, deep forked 26 inch buck spotted, you better seriously consider shooting him in my opinion.

Is there alot of private in the bookcliffs? Ive never been there hoping to draw a tag soon.

RutnBuck13- There is NOT a lot of private in the Book Cliffs, however, a lot of the little private areas happen to be in very prime spots to "shelter" animals from the public hunters. Often that includes mature deer and elk, and those landowners can make some money off it.

"Therefore, wo be unto him that is at ease in Zion!" 2 Ne. 28: 24

Yes im aware i was being a smartace. If your hunting the bookcliffs and having to pay to hunt private land there is a issue. ALL of the best hunting in my opinion is not even close to private property.

Sorry, I did't mean to discourage you. There's always a chance for a monster but I would hate to see someone pass up a nice 26 inch 180 buck hoping for bigger and eat tag soup. I think most people see kill pics of Vernon bucks that come off private property, not knowing they were killed on private, and it false advertises the unit. It's a very big reason why I have 15 points and continue to put in elsewhere, even though it would be the ideal LE unit for me to hunt being so close to home.

if you pass a 26" 180 buck hoping for bigger, you will likely eat tag soup!! 180 is on the higher end of things.
