I am taking my 14 year old nephew on his first deer hunt in unit 23, Monroe Utah in just a couple of weeks, opens Saturday Oct 22nd. We applied as a group for the hunt and he was the odd man out, and the only one who drew.

I was wondering if some with experience in the area wouldn't mind pointing me in the right direction for finding deer in this unit. I have never hunted the unit.

I am hoping to find him a 3 or 4 year old 3 or 4 point buck but we only have a couple days to hunt (Saturday and Monday) so monday will be any buck day.

I am going to scout and spot on october 7th to see if I can find an area to focus our efforts on opening day. Your help would be appreciated.

PM me if you please!

Harvest rates for that unit last year were the highest in the state... So I'd say your odds of finding a buck are pretty good. I'm not quite sure on the quality/age class of buck that those numbers refer to though. I'd say, considering you only have 2 days to hunt, your odds are slim of finding a 3-4 year old deer, however, considering this is your nephews first hunt, I'd be letting him shoot the first buck he saw that had a forked horn...

Good luck. And make sure to report back to us after the hunt how it went... :)

Wow, I literally grew up on the Monroe. I've spend many many days every year on the Monroe. Shooting a 4 year old buck in 2 days of hunting with a young hunter on the Monroe would be impressive to say the least. I mean like really really really impressive.

Hunt the oak and sage. You'll see deer.

Thanks for the help Muley_73, I plan to start out scouting the south portion of the unit since it appears to have more sage and oak brush and looks like Junipers on the google earth. There appear to be a couple good spotting areas and open country there as well. I tend to struggle a bit at locating good deer areas.

I completed a hunt there in 2021. Feel free to reach out for thoughts if you are headed there.
Taking my son on his first deer hunt. I’ve hunted elk there for years and seen lots of doe but not many bucks. Haven’t hunted on Monroe in 3 years. Typically hunt near the top though. Any advice? Thanks
