Fatrooster's 2016 hunts.

But I did not want to limit myself to one egg in my basket so I kept scouting for other bucks. I found a new buck and he became plan A.

Plan A buck got the name "Snickers" due to a bet me and my hunting partner made about who could find a shooter buck with the pay off for the bet being a Snickers candy bar. Well I won the candy bar and the buck was dubbed Snickers. Snickers would never bed in a stalk able spot but one day he finally did. I hiked up towards his bedding area but when I got to the top of the mountain I got leg cramps. While I was laying on the ground dying from my cramps, Snickers came out of his bed at 130 yards away and fed down the mountain never knowing I was close by. At 330 yards I got over my cramps and was able to get my pictures of him. He was out in the open with no chance of a stalk. Here is another picture of Snickers.

The next morning we did not see Snickers. Nor did we see him the next couple of days. It was now a full moon and some of the bucks were scraping off thier velvet and the whole bunch had disappeared. I had to make the decision to stay on Snickers or go after my plan B buck (the nice typical) which I had named Beetlejuice. Well I went after Beetlejuice but could not find him either. My archery season was cut short due to a muzzleloader deer tag I had in Colorado so reluctantly I put my bow away and grabbed the muzzleloader and headed for Colorado. Hers one last picture of Snickers.

In Colorado we found a couple of nice bucks but again, the best one pulled a disappearing act and come opening morning and throughout the hunt we never found him again. We called him "Colorado buck" because we kept asking the question, "Where is Colorado buck?" Here he is...

I decided to take one of Colorado buck's buddies who we called "Limpy" due to a very bad limp he had caused by a swelled up clubbed foot. He looked to be about 26"wide with good mass and had a 3x4 rack. I do not think he would have made it through the winter but would be honored forever on my wall. Here is a live picture of him bedded.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-01-16 AT 06:03PM (MST)[p]I snuck down to about 60 yards of Limpy and another buck that was bedded with him. The other buck got up and fed away and I knew Limpy would be getting up soon. When he did get up I threw one shot at him. He did not go far. If you look at his left front foot you can see that it was badly swollen.

When I got to Limpy I tried to turn and lift his head but he tried to roll down the mountain. So I waited for my partner to get to us. We drug him over to a small set of cliff rock and tied a rope to his antlers and the other end around some rocks. Now it was starting to get dark so I never got a picture of me with the buck. We debunked the meat and caped the buck. It took 5 hours to come down the mountain and get to the trail head at a late 2:30 am. The next day I got a picture with the antlers. Limpy turned out to be a 28" wide 3x4 with good mass. He scored 165" even though he was only a 3x4. I'm very happy with him and will be honored to have him on my wall. Fatrooster.

Congratulations on turning up some dandies Fatrooster.
Your Fall has been way more exciting and productive than mine. Good on you for finding success.

Every hunting season you miss is one you can not make up

That is a great buck, especially the mass, congrats!

I didn't peg you for a "high fenced" type of hunter but I see how you are. Great buck anyhow. :)

Cancer doesn't discriminate...don't take your good health for granted because it can be gone in a heartbeat. Please go back and read the last line. This time really understand what it says.

Thanks for the compliments guys.
Wizard, my high fences are the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. And then the unit boundaries. Your right, that's cheating, lol. Fatrooster.

But where is Daisy the mighty pack dog?? Nice pics and stories FR! Great mass on that "ol guy. Probably never had or woulda had a 4th.

Squirrel, we think he is a buck that we hunted two years ago. If it's him, he had the mass the frame and some extras. We think it is him in old age regressing.
Daisy the pack dog stayed home. She is pretty much retired. Fatrooster

Congrats on a couple great hunts. Also congrats on a great buck. Love the mass and a great looking buck. Thanks for sharing.

I get excited about big deer of course FR, but am fascinated by old deer more. Two years ago did he have a 4x4 rack and extras or just his 3x4 with some stickers?? Around here the frame tends to just get shorter and more massive and stickers more prolific as they "regress" The whole regress thing is over blown generally as they are still big, just don't score as well as score grossly favors tine length over all else... Nothing as cool as a gnarly old buck of 10+ years, and that one of yours is pretty cool.

Here is one that regressed about as much as can be, the most emaciated deer I've ever seen still able to move when I saw him last January and took his pic. Found his bones 50 yards from where I last watched him alive, trapped by last years deep snows.

Too bad about Miss Daisy getting old, I think the post about her ditching you and horn hunting on her own (complete with spotting scope!) was one of the best I have ever seen. If more on this site were like that the computer world would be a better place!

Getting a big ol' muley buck like that kinda validates you being on "Monster Muleys"! Like has been said by several, he has good mass! Congrats! From one "old fart" to another! ;-)
