Its coming, and every year the same complaint, a sea of orange. Hope you take a second and think about a decade from now, what will it be? That sea is a direct result of the current push to close out more and more, so fewer and fewer compete. The dwr is run by a now powerful special interest group, who arent for expanding your access. Look down sat, are you standing on ground that $fw owns or has opened up? How many millions have they bilked utah out of, yet there you are, with thousands of others, looking at orange, remembering the good old days. What changed? $fw, which now owns the WB, and with it, the loss of access as they pursue that all elusive buck, the one in someones wallet. Good luck, im sure you feel better knowing that some had to be sacrificed so the money men had more.

Are you always this bitter? Simply by the law of averages, there has to be something in regards to hunting that you don't complain about.

I hope those in the pumpkin patch have a fun weekend, find a deer they are happy with and make some memories. I remember hunting Utah as a kid back in the early 90' and loving every second of it. Good luck to all.

So do i, in fact early 80s. We will be out, but we do hear the same complaint. Point is, things changed, and not for the average guy, you cant deny it. Difference is i want EVERYONE to have memories like you and i, not fewer.

I feel like I can still find plenty of bucks, regardless of the orange tsunami. The problem I have...I finally got fed up with bullets literally buzzing over my head every opening day. Therefore, I will no longer hunt opening weekend of the rifle. Especially will not take my kids out on the opener. We will be out the following week and enjoy more serene woods together.

I've made it a point in 50 years of big game hunting to avoid crowds of other hunters. (sometimes we get away from the deer too. haha)

Nothing has changed at all for me or anyone with a little common sense. I'll take my wife out this weekend, we'll have a great time, we'll get away from the other hunter with very little extra effort and she'll probably shoot a buck.

If you're stuck in the sea of orange, you're within a quarter mile of the road and doing something wrong. Simple as that.

Hoss isn't always this negative and whiny, sometimes he's worse! (Calm down Hoss, it was a joke, sort of)

Just on thursdays, and every other tuesday. Not whining, i am camp ##### for this hunt, and we hunt manti, but how many guys can you stack on lightning ridge?

Every guy that gives it up because of crowds or whatever, diminishes our power, and weakens the sport. Thats not good for any of us. But its thursday, i got a dog to kick. Hope all you fellas have the hunt of your life this week, or more important, your kids do!!

Just making sure his name is on this thread also, he surely has an opinion on this also.

Hoss,
2 of my 5 kids have tags but one can't break away and the other one is going to her inlaw's camp so my wife is on her own with me playing the role of outfitter/guide/cook/camp biotch and we're going to have ton of fun being out there with the "patch".
It's usually about my kids but this trip is all about the wonderful old gal!
Best,
Zeke

One more thought....

Inhave no idea how our F&G can ever be expected to please folks!

Hoss talks about overcrowding as do others while other guys scream that we are limiting the tags too much and way more tags should be distributed to the ever-growing population of hunters....to keep the interest and perpetuate the sport. No one is right and no one is wrong. People just have different ideas of what's best....for them.

Yep, I don't have the answers but I think our game managers, while not perfect for everyone, do a pretty good job of balancing LE and General deer and same for elk. There's always something to hunt. Yessir, there's always something to hunt in Utah and for you guys who don't know differently and listen to all the manure about the State, the sky is not falling! There's always a way to hit the hills and enjoy the sport!

Be safe out there this weekend.

Finished up an addition for a guy today. He mentioned he and his boys were going backpacking this weekend. Told him could be crowded. He said he knew, he gave up hunting, became too big a hassle, too crowded on monte. It is what it is, but there was 3 more guys not buying stuff. Three more votes not happening. 3 more guys playing golf or skiing. I just worry that we are killing off oirselves with the "30incher behind every tree", that $fw tries selling as an excuse to weed out more and more folks. I think back to the early 80's, the state shut down friday before. Hunting was the big daddy, and as such we had political power. We now have very little, the don has more himself, and thats why we r on the trajectory we r on.

Hey Zeke, just to clarify...

Both times that I have had bullets whizzing over my head (last year) and over me and my son's heads (5-6 bullets 4 years ago), we were over 2 miles from the trail head and big elevation gain. Even the weekend warriors are hiking in further and seem to shoot (and miss) at skylined bucks, with no idea where their bullets go off to afterwards.

bullets flying over yer head...don't worry about them...just hunker down....the one you don't hear is the one that gets you..

We'll for you younger guys who weren't around or don't remember they used to close the schools on Friday for the deer hunt in the 60's and 70's it was a state holiday of sorts.
Even people who didn't hunt went to the hills with their families and camped and had great times.
We used to hunt the LaSals back in the 60's and there would be about 12 to 15 cousins and uncles and associated family members and was that ever fun. Some of the best times I remember with my Dad. You could shoot anything then buck or doe and in some cases there were extra tags and extended seasons especially the Manti which was open until Thanksgiving.
Those were the days and if we lose that with the younger guys there won't be anything left for future generations.
We are all hunters and are the same in our love for the hunt, if it is to remain the same for future generations we have to stick together for the right reasons
Good luck to all this weekend be safe and good luck and last of all I am jealous

It was this way in the 80's and early 90's as well I grew up in Provo and we got out of School half day on Friday and all day Monday every year for the Deer Hunt Weekend!

You guys from Utah all want to have your cake and eat it too. You want to live in big houses in sprawling subdivisions, drive an suv and a jacked up Ford, pump out 5-7 kids, and complain about the state of wildlife and the "good ole days". Utah's population has doubled since the 1960s, and it will double again in the next 20 years. Hunting will never again be like it was in the good ole days and I can only fear what will happen as the human footprint expands.

Some of you guys are talking out of both sides of your mouth!

You want less crowding, more opportunity, bigger bucks, youth special hunts, family hunts, all with no impact on the herd and no reduction in tags. Our heads are spinning from all the "professional" game biology and management on the threads at MM.

You're upset when folk leave the ranks of hunters yet you complain about too many folks in the hills. I have yet to see that kind of fancy math but the common denominator is "complain"..

No wonder our game managers can't get it right...according to some!

Even though appaloosa made a veiled jab at our culture, he's right. "you can't have your cake and eat it too"

How can the F&G get it right until we know what we want... since everyone wants something different?

Yep, there are exceptions to every rule. Sorry for your back experience with whizzing bullets. NOT FUN, I'm sure
Zeke

Geez appaloosa so much doom and gloom, we all would like it to be like it was when we were kids but reality says different. I used to live in Utah as a kid but I am now a transplant in Cali. My son and I just want to hunt, it's not about the crowds it's about the experience and getting out in the mountains.
Yes I want to preserve hunting for future generations because I see so many kids boys and girls alike that are losing their way.
There was a post on this site about a week ago where a young dad took his three sons muzzy hunting and his kid got a nice 4 point and he filmed it.
It was a great piece and that Man with his kids showed what it is all about. He is taking the time to spend with his boys so they are not getting into trouble.
It is not just hunting it is more important than that it is about preserving the time spent with family and friends and enjoying what you are doing. For what it is worth I think they should still close the schools!!!!

..so, Utah is the only state with a sprawling population, big houses, big trucks and suvs, and diminishing opportunity???? You need to get out more and spend less time watching Gore climate change movies. I would also challenge your air statistic of summarily pontificating an average of 5-7 kids.

FWIW schools in Utah were closed both Thursday and Friday for UEA conference. Just can't call it a day off before the deer hunt.
I know my grandkids were having a great time in the mountains.
