It only took me a decade and a half to draw the Paunsaugunt tag this year! I did t know I could hunt it on a Zion general tag. Good hell, I can get one if those every year so I guess I'm not done on the Paunsaugunt unit!

All true except the last line.....for you guys who can't read sarcasm.

Makes me sick!

He will get off because there was an issue internally at the DWR with position changes. We are not sure if he received the letter stating the laws and boundaries with his tag. So with that discrepancy, he will get off the hook.

First off- Lots of great sarcastic comments guys. I LOLed at more than a few..!! Phone calls, staff changes, etc... Nice. :)

Second, if you are asking if animals are poached on private land huntinguy, I'm afraid my answer would be "yes." I accompanied some friends hunting last year on some private ground. Once we had locked the gate behind us and driven onto the property for a few minutes, we were completely secluded from any roads or prying eyes. I remember commenting later in the day that a private land owner could do just about whatever they wanted out there. Considering how much private land there is, it would be unreasonable to think that poaching doesn't occur... That said, I think most people still have a problem committing crimes, the debate comes up when individuals don't believe it is a crime to kill animals on their own property...

Also, that Monroe buck is unreal for a general season area. That buck was literally stolen from anyone hunting that unit.

+1 Browning rage on lack of serious comments so far. I do however appreciate yours and Zeke's thoughts.

However I think my point/question was missed. It's not so much the private land thing as it is people using general season deer tags to then take LE season deer in this case two guys using Zion tags to pop over to the Pauns to take two deer.

Do you all think this happens frequently during legitimate deer seasons- people hunting LE units with general season tags then getting off scot free?

I thought this subject would interest more people. Perhaps the silence says something about the subject.

huntinguy,
Yes it does either by accident or on purpose.

Years, ago while on the Vernon unit, some guys drove into our camp and commented that they'd seen more guys this year than in the past several years. It sounded fishy so I asked how many had tags and the reply was every one of them had a tag. That's weird since it's a LE unit and a truck load of guys all had tags?!?!

I got their plate number and informed them they were in the middle of a LE unit. Subsequently, they left in a hurry but only drove a short distance away where I could hear a shouting match. Someone was angry!

A very short time later a Utah LE DWR guy came by and I gave him the info but he said that if I had not seen them hunting, there was nothing he could do. Probably correct but really, someone should have had the sheet scared out of them, at the least!

Yep, it happens and no doubt the Vernon had lost several buck to just this one group of guys!

If this had a "WLH or Mossback" attached to it, it would be lite up like a Christmas tree... It doesn't matter who it is this kind of sh!t happens way more than any of us know... and it's robbing from the honest folks and our youth... it's really too bad what people will do for the sake of inches...

I'm sure it does happen both on purpose and on accident.
I had it happen to me twice on accident, once I was in CO hunting pronghorn. Wasn't paying as much attention as I should have driving to next public land spot. Got distracted and got outside of my unit. I figured it out about 10-15 minutes later and was thankful I didn't shoot anything. Scared the crap out of myself.

Second, I had a LE tag in UT and it was only scouting but I ended up outside of the unit and ran into some hunters. I was like dam there is a lot of hunters around. Here to find out I was outside of my unit in the general unit. Again, I was only scouting for my upcoming hunt but things happen. Was younger then, learned and pay a lot more attention to where I am at now vs just charging ahead...

I'm sure hunters do it on purpose often too. People hunt the border of a LE unit, go in quick shoot and get out or even retrieve animal after dark. It would be very difficult for a warden to catch this act though.

I agree!! I think all poachers should be prosecuted. Whether that is an over limit violation or out of season violation. But to shoot something just to watch it fall then leave it, this guy is not a hunter, just another dirtbag.
