Here's a buck that I had remounted for my FIL. We used the caped off my 2016 muzzleloader buck. The buck was killed in So. Utah in 1964.
Any guesses on how wide?

I agree he's up there pushing 40 for sure. We rarely see bucks that wide so it's kind of hard to judge from a picture. The thing that really impresses me most is the quality of the taxidermy work on both of those bucks . The look of their faces really express the studs that they are.

If that buck is 24" ear to ear he is at least 40 " if not over. Both are STUDS . Thx for sharing .

Here's the 1964 mount.
I'd say it looks a little better now. lol

Yes sir, night and day difference in the taxidermy work. Be looking forward to your letting us know the number . I'm putting my 2 cents at 41"

Very UN-ETHICAL For You Guys to Shoot Bucks that Wide!

And they really suck to try and pack out, getting through all the tree branches and all.
Pisscutters are a lot easier to pack out, you might be onto something shooting those smaller bucks Elkassign.

If he was shot back in the day, I'm guessing he should have won a Jeep from Zinik's or Wolfes big buck contests. He looks like he'd be a real contender most years.

I am going to say around the magic 40" mark. My Dad shot one in 64 down around nebo that was 40" wide.
Have pictures but someone stole the horns out of the garage, sure would like to have those back now.

I saw this mount when I dropped my horns off last month to have the mount finished. Wish I remember what he said its width was. Fine looking mount!

I should have asked you guys what you think it scored.
How about 190". Does it go over or under 190" gross?

damn it I thought this was gonna be picts of women but instead stupid deer haha. Looks to be 39 inches wide and 191.

91 left 78 right 28 spread credit
197 gross

LAST EDITED ON Jun-14-17 AT 08:03PM (MST)[p]I'll have to give in and change my estimate to 41 and 1/8th wide.

And give him 190 & 6/8" gross score.

If he had some tine length....................... whew!

Well, I guess we've drug this out long enough. There was some pretty good guesses.
Right now he's 38 2/8 wide and gross scores about 193, nets in the upper 170s. Just shows how much long main beams and a good inside spread can carry a bucks score. I'm sure the buck was pushing 40"s when it was killed.

Thanks for sharing. He's a rare buck. I have to believe there are very few mule deer that have ever been killed that are that wide and straight up 4 x 4. He was a pleasure to see. Glad you preserved him for future generations to enjoy.

Ridge tops......what's the chance of giving us the measurements? I'm always looking to better my field judging abilities! Thanks

Awesome deer no matter the inches! Thanks for sharing!

Was 38 the inside score, or the widest outside?

Widest outside. So when guys say they saw or missed a 40"er, it's safe to call BS in most cases.

Right now, the buck is about 7' off the floor. I will probably take it down this weekend, so my wife can take it to my in-laws. I'll throw a quick tape on it then.
BTW, the 193" is going off memory from several years ago.

Are the big deductions from gross to net because of the difference in the inside spread and the longest main beam? Seems like it has to be as I do not see major deductions anywhere else.

It would be great to know inside spread and main beam length.

Cool buck! It was probably a 40"er when it was shot!

I had him at 190" on the nose. 30" inside, 30" main beams, 30" of mass. Left side and right both at 35". stronger on the left in the front and in the back on the right. I am pretty curious to see how close or far off I was if you decide to post the measurements.

Here's the measurements:
Left:
H-1: 5 2/8
H-2: 5
H-3: 3 6/8
H-4: 4 5/8
G-1: 0
G-2: 14 6/8
G-3: 10 4/8
G-4: 11 5/8
Main: 27 4/8
Total: 83

Right:
H-1: 5 2/8
H-2: 5
H-3: 4 1/8
H-4: 4 2/8
G-1: 0
G-2: 18 1/8
G-3: 10
G-4: 6 2/8
Main: 25 5/8
Total: 78 5/8

Inside: 30
Total Gross: 191 5/8
Deductions: 16 2/8
Net Score: 175 3/8

Thanks for getting those measurements! He'll go upper 180's gross given your numbers.

thanks for putting the numbers up. I always like to see where I am right and also not so much and need to get better.

Great buck. Thanks for posting. Just one quick scoring tip. The inside spread is the greatest distance between the left and right beam parallel to the base. The inside spread cannot be larger then the longest main beam.

Ya, I knew that too. I was just in a big hurry to get it done. I also was using a nylon string instead of a steal tape, so my measurements were pretty tight. I'm sure the buck falls somewhere right at that 190" mark gross.
