Roosevelt Bulls

Hey guys,

So I have a few points to burn and was looking into Roosevelt Elk for 08. How does OR stand up against locations such as BC/Vancouver island etc.? Are any units in OR restricted enough to allow the Roosevelt's to gain full maturity with good overall numbers? I can't pay $20,000 to hunt Vancouver Island, but I think it would be fun to tag a Roosevelt. Is it worth my points to go for a OR Roosevelt Mature Bull?

Thanks for any suggestions.

If I was going to go after Roosevelt elk in Oregon I would put in for the Powers one bull elk tag. For the one bull tag there is only 62 tags per year. I know of a couple of guys who hunt the area when they are lucky enough to get a tag and always seem to come home with very nice bulls.

I agree Powers is the unit on public land. I have seen some hogs that have come out of that unit. Additionally if you can find a land owner to hunt the area west of Corvallis they also kill some huge bulls. Unfortunately most the elk are on private ground. JB

How much can you pay? $10,000 might get you an auction tag and that would get you a rifle tag in September to hunt the Powers unit. The Powers unit is extremly difficult even with the low tag numbers because they let the spike hunters in there to stir it up.

support your local guzzlers. OHA life member, lapine oregon --- most of western oregon is general season, open to anyone. there are big bulls all over the cascades if you want to work for them. indigo, dixon, rogue, mckenzie units and the upper dechutes, fort rock west of 97 are all general season and have big bulls. 7 day season oct. 20th thru 26th

First Off Baltz you are wrong as far as the units you described. Those units are classified as Cascade Roosevelts. They are not eligible for addmittance nor recognized by the SCI, B&C, nor pope and young as roosevelts.

The best roosevelt unit in the state is the powers for Rifle and Archery. The Archery tag is the better if you hunt with a bow or rifle. a 300" Roosevelt is not out of the question for either hunt. With your points I would look at hiring a good outfitter for that hunt someone who really knows the unit. Sixes while a ton of private has some great bulls in it as well. Chetco has some decent bulls also. If you want some more info on these tags send me a PM I can help you out on info on the powers.

However Powers is the tag to have and a Governors elk tag will run between 18k and 30k for the tag.

I won't pay $10,000 for a hunt, however I am going into the 08 hunt with 13 points (non-res) and may be incline to hire a guide for this one (it would be the first time I have ever paid for a guide). I can hunt with a bow/ML/rifle. I guess I'm just trying to figure out if it's worth burning my points on a OR Roosevelt elk hunt, or look to another area such as AK for a smaller bull and a smaller price tag, and stick to Rocky Mt bull's in OR. BTW - I have one or two Rocky's on the wall / garage, but no monsters per MM standards:)

So - would you go for the Roosevelt's, and what's my odds of taking a very nice bull per Roosevelt standards?

Thank you for the response so far.

Here's a Roosevelt bull my cousin took about ten years ago in Sixes unit. He usually takes a good bull every year or two.

And an old photo of my Great Grandpa (Left), uncle behind him and my grandpa on the right. This is also a Roos taken out of the Tioga.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-23-07 AT 02:08PM (MST)[p]I'd look at a general archery tag (roos) and hold out for a wenaha or walla walla tag. Then possibly go for a powers tag, you should be able to get a landwoner tag and ranch hunt in the powers unit for less than 5 grand.

There are some big roosies out there most in general areas. I saw a true 340in roosevelt bull west of 5 during the general archery season. Also saw several in the 250-310 range over the season. They just live in sh!t holes. I'm going to scout the areas pretty hard next year and see if I can't get them to come into a tree stand.
