AZ ELK DRAW

LAST EDITED ON Feb-17-15 AT 11:22AM (MST)[p]Now that he application period is up, wondering where everyone put in for, what points, and if you are a resident or non res?

I put in for 27 muzzle and 1 archery as a NON res with 14 points. I think I have a decent chance of hunting this fall in AZ.

Wondering with the possible changes in the draw allocations if more high point non residents put in for tags this year to draw?

Thanks.

I'm kind of curious of how many NR's applied this year instead of buying points. I predict a lot of guys with max or near max points did out of fear G&F is going to make changes next year. Will be interesting to see once reports are published.

I'm a resident and I put in for middle of the road units just hoping to draw something.

Good luck to everyone who applied.

8 pts NR. 3A/3C on a long shot and 4A.

I think there will be a lot of long faces this year with the system letting guys apply without buying a 2015 license. That's my only chance on 3C tag I'm sure.

Unit 27 muzzy, unit 9 archery. Res 2 points. Well actually NR, but I have the Lifetime license.

I plan on drawing CO this year, so longshots at best... but as a Resident you never know.

I (Non Res) have only 7 points and put in for 27 muzzy, do you think I have a chance if there are random tags?

LAST EDITED ON Feb-17-15 AT 09:47PM (MST)[p]Huntin50 You will draw that unit 1 archery tag in the bonus pass unless some insane amount of NR decide to put in for it with more than 14 points. Probably won't ever have a chance at the muzzy tag with that archery tag as 2nd choice. Either way your odds of going hunting this year are about 99.9%

two of us with 15 pts IF I got my loyalty point back(wrote check for 3 cents not enough 5 yrs ago) on this years app, game and fish said it will be. otherwise we will be at 14. Unit 1 archery and 3ac second choice archery

For me - NR with 10 points, 3A-3C Archery and 27 Archery.

For my youngest son - NR with 4 points, 1-2A-2C Late Rifle and 27 Late Rifle

For my other two sons - just purchased their 10th bonus points since they are both in college and don't have the time to dedicate to this hunt.

LAST EDITED ON Feb-18-15 AT 07:14AM (MST)[p]Unit 1 archery elk with 13 but no chance due to everyone, their uncle, brother-in-law, cousins and dogs all dropping down from chasing unit 9 in order to cash points before we get hosed in 2016.

Not a total disaster for me as at least I'll finally get to cash some long saved Utah and/or OR points. But the value of my AZ points will be raped.

I was looking to use my 11 NR points this year due to looming changes. I had to decide between an early archery hunt on a unit I don't know or a late rifle on a unit I know well. I decided to apply with my brothers on late rifle 9. 3 apps average of 7 points. We will see.

No. There wont be any random tags.

Lots of people chasing unit 1 archery this year. I bet there is a decent jump in required points for that unit.

Are you referencing this, and that people don't realize they have to have it valid til the end of the draw?

"An applicant must possess a license (including
lifetime, pioneer or disabled veteran?s)
that is valid on the last day of the application
deadline for that draw"

Thanks, should have put in for a late season rifle tag.

LAST EDITED ON Feb-18-15 AT 10:23PM (MST)[p]Just getting started in Az with 3 NR PPs so I went late rifle 27 and 6B.

But I'll be @ 10PPs in 5 years with loyality and HS PPs since I never draw anything until I have more than enough PPs to draw.

Then I'll probably draw some late season, second choice hunt.

Unit 1 archery has creeped 2 points in the last 2 years. I drew in 2013 with 11 as an alternate and had I not drawn I would still be on the outside looking in.

Bought my 5th point...no chance at a tag. Good news is, loyalty point kicked in and taking the HE class in April, so I jump from 4 to 7 points this year. Sure wish I could do that again!

That's not true. You could draw many tags with 4 points.

I would assume he is an Non Res looking for a "decent" tag therefore no chance.

If youre a NR You probably drew back to back late rifle tags in an average unit. Which for the most part isn't considered a very sought after hunt. If you drew back to back early rifle tags go buy a lottery ticket because you're probably the first person to ever do so.

Define decent. You can draw many tags as a NR with 4 points and have a legit shot at 340 type bulls. Is that not a decent tag? To me, it is.

Burned 12 points on unit 27 last year, killed a Giant. Put in for unit 4 with 1 point NR this year. Huntin50 you will be hunting unit 1 this year, Zim you will too buddy. However, unit 1 is red hot right now so will be interesting to see. Hung out with a bunch of unit 1 boys in town, the stories that had......Good luck guys. I will be back in New Mexico most likely. Maybe Montana.

My cards started getting hit march 22 last year and results posted a couple weeks later!
U guys r funny how u obsess so much about points on this forum!
My theory for az points is they r like money, they don't hurt to have! But that being said I have drawn multiple back to back archery bull elk tags along with several others I know, helped a kid on a hunt in 2013 that drew an early rifle bull tag w 2 points! That's what's so awesome about az draw system!

I believe it said by April 18th in the regs BUT hopefully much sooner!

Hey thanks guys. I wish they were a little quicker with their results, but it is what it is.

Huntin50, final;y checked my inbox, I did PM you back.

"My only regret in life is setting my goals too low"

As a non-res with 17 points, I applied for unit 9 archery. I've hunted in that unit 3 times and if I draw I'll be hunting the entire season.

Last year, they started hitting credit cards on Mar 19.

Sure wish the AZ results and NM deadline overlapped just a day or two. Or NM allowed changes, but they don't. :(

For all you guys that think you have no chance at a decent archery unit with few bonus points, I beg to differ.

Maybe I shouldn't say this, and I know some are gonna be upset, but I know a NR archer who drew a Unit 6A archery bull tag with 1 point!

Now before you go on that there are too many tags (there is) that is is crowed at times (it is) that there are no big bulls there (wrong on that point) I'll just say this.

I get to go up there almost every every with clients and I think if they were honest, they would tell you what a good hunt this is.

Last year on that hunt, my hunter and I saw a number of bulls 350 or better, and the bull he was chasing the day he killed was a 7 X 7 that we thought would go in the 370's!

No, they are are not a lot of these big bulls out there, but they are there, and for the guy willing to be patient and can SHOOT, the opportunities will be there.

Many archers would just like to take a branch antlered bull and this is the place to do it. Sure the "average" 6x6 bull here is between 280-310, but if you haven't ever taken an elk with a bow, and want that thrill of the rut elk hunt, then put that unit on your list.

Here is a bull I took on the muzzleloader hunt a few years ago, which was right after the archery hunt. This bull actually had a cut on his shoulder from an arrow that ALMOST got him!

Don't wait and wait. Unit 6A is a great archery elk unit.

You and Wapitibob want to tell all the SECRETS LOL. Everyone should wait for unit 9. I would do the same if I knew from experience. Thanks to you and Wapitibob for being good people. They are getting few and far between anymore.
