What's up with this? Just made my first trip to Utah for deer and every other pickup had human and rifle in back ready to go. Is this for the quick shot? Does any dumbass think that this is the way to get it done? I'm mostly just curious. You don't see this anywhere else I've hunted...

Could have shot a hundred bucks that way a couple years ago when my dad drew a tag

utards.....

They do the same thing during archery season.

That's something to see, 4 guys in the back of a truck with their arrows nocked!

Had a friend get bounced of a truck bed at about 15 mph on a ranch road...he got a very bad head injury and now is like a 4 yr old..
This was a vet ...a combat war veteran and now he craps himself all because he wanted to ride to the pheasant field in bad of a truck..
I seen 3 a day in Utah..
Smacked

LOL yes this is exclusive to Utah. The archery hunters invented it. LOL give me a break.

If you've never seen it in other states, then you've never hunted in other states. I've seen it from
Arizona, to Utah, Colorado, Wyoming. Idaho
And I've watched guys do it in Montana.

>Huh? Guess it must work then.

It was on the paunsagunt we saw dozens and dozens of bucks from the road and actually I was told by all the locals don't spend a second out walking around unless you do happen to see something way off,I was told to drive and cover as much ground as we could at day break and evening and it was true.

Back 30 years ago I use to see guys sitting in raised seats like carp bow shooting set ups in boats in the back of trucks but that all went away when they passed the law of no riding in the back

I do not understand why there is so many people that hate Utah so much but you all keep coming back.
From this one Utard i am asking all you haters please stop coming back.

Love the urban dictionary post....

I personally have not witnessed people riding in the backs of trucks while in Utah. I have spent a little bit of time at Taco Time in Provo and by the time we hit Deer Creek, I have to poop.

+1 on this...
Everyone assumes it's ?utards??
But hell, if your a NR in these places where it's so common, are you sure it's ?utards??
But ya know what, keep on coming back!
Happy to have you...
Don?t get to close though, it's contagious!!!

They all had utard plates. Maybe they were NRs that borrowed a pickup I guess... And it was my first trip. I won't be back. At least not to that particular area...

I agree, let's keep the Utard rumors going. I wish people stopped coming to Utah. Its a great place, lets keep as many people out as we can. Its getting spoiled way too fast.

So, yes Utah is full of absolute idiot hunters - I recommend all MM members hunt in other states. Thanks!!

I see it all the time in New Mexico. Usually when I encounter another hunter off the road in NM, it's a fellow nonresident.

You must not hunt NM much. I know a ton of great resident hunters. We all get out and pack our ass back in there to find animals. Very little game in New Mexico can be spotted right off the road. You gotta really put in some boot leather to locate game. I'm sure there are some retards driving around in trucks with their guns hanging out the windows and all, but these are the same morons that would shoot a damn burro or donkey and think they killed a trophy doe deer.

Just my 2 cents

LAST EDITED ON Oct-31-18 AT 06:39AM (MST)[p]I have a confession....as a kid growing up in the X zone of North Eastern California in the 60's we road hunted out of the back of the pick-up....Deer...Ducks...Doves....and I can attest to the ancient empty shell casings I find along the emigrant trails here in Wyoming..it didn't start in California...

There are no deer in Utah, every ridge is solid orange. Dudes in guille suits in the back of every truck. Camps are all full, BYU coeds will try and marry you if you come.

Pretty bad place to hunt.

Feel free to copy and paste to every hunting site.

This sort of thing happens in every western state. Some states it got so bad they passed laws to make it harder to do anything with it. Take CO for instance, rifle must be unloaded and in a case while in a vehicle or ohv. Several states have laws similar to this. Utah's laws aren't nearly as stringent. One thing I've noticed. Certain Units draw different demographical hunters. The Manti, Wasatch, Fishlake units etc are full of road hunters because there are lots of roads. You will see more back of the truck hunters on these units. Units like Pine Valley, San Juan, Indian Peak units etc you won't see back of the truck road hunters as much. The fact of the matter is hunters will do anything they can to be successful and do it the easiest way possible. IT DOESN'T MATTER WHAT STATE YOU HUNT. YOU WILL ALWAYS SEE HUNTERS DOING THINGS YOU DON'T LIKE.

If you have not witnessed this in other states, you are either blind, or you don't hunt other states. Sounds like you're blind....
I have witnessed guys in the back of a truck in Utah, Idaho, Wyoming, colorado, Iowa, Nebraska. It happens in every state.

20+ years hunting northern Nevada southern idaho without seeing it. Must be blind. Or just dont spend too much time on roads...

Maybe just not to the same frequency in other states. I've hunted Montana, new Mexico, Arizona, Oregon, Wyoming somewhat regularly and idaho, Nevada as long as I can remember.

You see dudes cruising the roads but I've never seen someone in a sleeping bag with rifle at ready in the back of the truck till I went to Utah.

I seen a professional road hunting rig in Oregon 20 years ago. It was a subaru wagon with the roof cut off. They built a rail around where the roof use to be. One guy driving while 3 guys were standing on the seats leaning on the railing with arrows nocked!

Old hat. Seen it many times back in the 80's in NM during rifle deer hunts.

Welcome to UT, land of wide streets and narrow minds...

LAST EDITED ON Oct-31-18 AT 04:00PM (MST)[p]How do you think we are gonna kill these 30 inches, 200 inch muleys?!
Like coyote hunters use a shotgun as a backup for close encounters, in Utah, we just jump out the bed of the truck and Speer them with our knives if they get to close to the road.
Must be in the water because I've never seen so many dumb deer in my life! Why would you hang out by the road during hunting season?
The deer think there's a parade about to take place or something!
But I'm sorry to break it to you all nonresidents.....This kind of activity is the sole cause why there is no more deer in Utah. You might want to look at other states..
Sorry! :/
Let us Utards keep hammering the 4x4 trails and our African safari style hunting tactics to get the few deer that might remain.
We will just rely on your home turf to bring back the deer populations in Utah with our open borders. ;)

LAST EDITED ON Oct-31-18 AT 03:57PM (MST)[p]Guys, didn't I already tell you - don't hunt in Utah! Its full of unethical hunters, tiny bucks, camps everywhere, crazy herd management, and religious people (heaven forbid). Oh, and the elk are extremely small too.

Definitely apply in other western states and stay away from Utah.

Sorry, I am having way too much fun with this post...

Sounds like the high rack trucks in South Texas. Of course they care more for the environment in Oregon so they use a fuel efficient Subaru. :)

10yrs or so back I was bowhunting in ND and saw a crew from Wisconsin road hunting in their mini-van. They drove around with the sliding doors open ready to shoot.

LAST EDITED ON Feb-26-19 AT 09:24PM (MST)[p]?? funniest thing I've read all day. Thanks for the laugh hoss

For those of you who think this is a Utah phenomenon, you haven't been around much! It happens in most places with hunters who are ready to fill their tags! That includes COUNTRIES to the north and south(Canada and Mexico).

I don't condone the practice, nor is it my preferred hunting method, but to call it a ?Utah thing? is well......simple, and inaccurate. Get out, explore, and hunt in a manner that suits you best. Utah isn't lacking in hunters, so find a place that makes you happy.

Happy hunting

I remember a guy I worked with back in the 90's. Back then you could still hunt the Kaibab archery hunt over the counter. He and his brother got busted up by Jacobs' Lake for shooting a dwr deer decoy from the bed of the truck.

Roadhunting, they saw the decoy, thinking it was a live buck. Stopped the truck, and the brother in the bed flung an arrow. Next thing they know, fish and game guys boiled out of the brush from all directions. So yeah, maybe the archery hunters did start this ;-)

I'm from Utah born and raised. I bow hunted the Books out of the back of a truck in the 70 and 80 it was the best way to see over the oak brush, and you could cover a lot of ground.Every body did it,some guys even had high racks.Back in my wilder days we killed a few geese the same way.But that's a different story. And if want to give me $hit that's ok. I'll guarantee ya,you would of been doing the same thing.

I've hunted several western states and have never seen this type of hunting. But then again I'm never by a road during the light of day either. I love road hunters - the more driving around on the road means less pressure in the woods where I'm hunting. Lol

During the Archery Hunt We seen Some StickFlippers that were Pro's!

2 Straight Piped Side by Sides!

Following each other no matter where they Raced to at Amazing Speeds!

You couldn't of Pored any more Dust on them than what they were Wearing!

A Couple of them were Smart enough to have Goggles!

Looked like they all needed full face Respirators with Oxygen!

Arrows Nocked!

Don?t any of you guys feel sorry for the kids of today who have never known the joy of riding on the tailgate of a pickup truck?

I know riding on your high horses is much safer.

DBLung, Just curious, but could you send any info on the fact that a rifle has to be cased while in a vehicle? I have seen the unloaded statute and a statute on some OHVs, but I have never seen the statute on rifle cased in vehicle.

Thanks!

God I remember those good old days of flicking arrows out of trucks, I also remember riding to school in the back of a pick up and the first girl in the back of the truck. Now the only place it happens is Utah.
