utah draw

I know we've hashed this out several times and everybody is sick of it, but after looking at the UT website and calling Cabelas TAG system, I'm still a bit confused. The lady with Cabelas informed me that you get both a bonus point and a preference point when you are unsuccessful in drawing. The way I understand it, a certain portion of licenses are allocated based on preference points and the remainder of the licenses go to the bonus point draw. If this is correct, I think I understand so far. Basically, you "could" draw your first year, just with very low odds.

What gets me all mixed up is there are LE permits, once in a lifetime permits, and general season.

I need some help: I really don't care do get drawn (I mean, if I did that would be awesome), but I'm just trying to start accumulating points of some kind. What do I need to do this?

Bonus points are for the LE and OIL hunts only

Preference points are for the General deer season draw.

so say you apply for LE Elk and a OIL Moose you would get a BONUS point if you do not draw for each of these species.

if you apply for a say southern deer general hunt tag and dont draw, you would recieve a PREFERENCE point for the general deer season.

so you would recieve a bonus point for moose and elk and a preference point for a general deer if you draw nothing.

its simple, if you just want points, allyou gotta do is apply for the point itself, you can get one for general, LE and once in a lifetime how ever since the state of utah doesnt charge you the full amount of the tag unless you draw then it amkes sense to pray you get lucky and do draw so just apply for the tags you want and if you dont draw then you get a point and it wont cost you unless you draw, goodluck

So if I hear this right, you are saying that the LE and OIL hunts are pure lottery every year, with the exception that the more bonus points you have, the more times your name gets put in the hat?

For general hunting season, preference point rules apply for all licenses, right?

The bonus point/preference point terminology is confusing to me too, but nochawk explained it well. I would suggest you actually go apply, because the application process works you through step by step and it is not nearly as confusing as the proclamation makes it sound. If you get in the middle and you are still confused you can always quit and start over later. I think it is very user friendly. Good luck!

yep, you got it.

The preference points help you draw a southern general tag, I have 4 now, 5 counting this year and am hoping I can draw it this year.

How come when you go to huntodds.com and look at LE hunts, bonus points are listed as well as preference points and it looks like the applicants with the most pp and bonus points are the applicants drawing - or at least the applicants that have a higher percentage draw odds? I thought the LE hunts were based on bonus points only?

It is possible to draw a coveted tag on your first attempt. You'd have to a pretty luck mo fo tho. 50% of tags go to those with the most points, the remainder go into a random draw. The random draw does not take into account points.

So . . . you COULD draw a Henry Mtn tag on your first app.

So, the 50% that go to those with the most points - points meaning preference points???

Then, the random draw, the remaining 50%, these are based on bonus points, right?

You must be marking the wrong box. Everyone with 1 preference point gets a tag. The general draw is not a lottery, they give all those with preference points a tag first, then draw the rest. There has never been a year yet where those with points was more than the tag allotment. So if you have 4 preference points, you have wasted 3 years.

Are you serious? Its been explained about 5 times. Forget the websites you are looking at. It is simple. LE hunts accrue bonus points. The general draw accrues preference points.

Preference points = gaurantee you a general season tag - until that day finally hits when there are more people with preference points than there are tags available, which has yet to ever be close - even in the Southern region.

Bonus points = the number of times your name goes into the draw for 50% of the LE and OIL hunts, unless you have enough BONUS POINTS to automatically receive one of the other 50% of the tags. Some hunts have so many applicants with max BONUS points and so few tags, nobody is gauranteed and those with max BONUS points just go through two draws and could miss out on both.

Thank God the DWR rejects incorrect applications.

Thank God I don't have to hunt with you. Sorry we don't all know the proclamation backwards and forwards. This will be my first time to enter in for Utah.

Sounded a bit terse, didn't I. I just want to make it clear for you. It is not an easy process. I think I know it pretty well, then I have people try to tell me how I am wrong all the time. But, my thinking of how it works has never failed me yet, and rather than guess, I just read the proc.

Last year there were just over 22,000 who applied for the Southern Region rifle hunt. 16,000 (and change) of those were successful. That means there were about 6000 preference points awarded to unsuccessful applicants. That means those 6000 would all get tags this year if they applied. Then the remaining 10,000 tags go into a draw. So pretty much if you have a PP you get a tag. The goal is to make it so everyone gets a chance.

Good luck! Sorry to sound irritated (its work that does that to me).

This was the first time it was explained in full correctly.

He just asked a question. Geez.

OK - I officially feel bad.

That said, the difference between preference and bonus was explained correctly before. Understanding the Points is simple once you have the right info. Even understanding the points though, the whole Utah application and draw process is difficult to understand/predict/comprehend.

I think a good understanding of the proc, together with looking at huntodds.com and other prediction websites, makes good sense and can guide you on where to apply. One thing I know for sure, I made a big mistake seven years ago when I started collecting elk bonus points rather than deer. Its gonna take me at least 7 more years to spend my points unless I get really lucky. Also, they should change the OIL moniker to OILIYL. Once-in-a-lifetime-if-your-lucky.

Thanks for all the posts - this thread had been extremely helpful.

thebuckstopshere - I can understand that this can be irritating sometimes.

Looks like I'll be putting in for UT this year!!!!!!!!!!!

Good luck to all.

I think the big guy upstairs wants me to just hunt antelopes... I can draw those tags in UT,WY,Colo, and Montana... but try and draw a elk, moose, sheep, or deer tag in any of those states I just cant pull a tag.

This year we will find out if all of us with 1 point in wyoming for elk, deer, and antelope will draw tags over those with 0 points...

Good luck in the draws, you cant draw if you dont apply..

I looked at the link.

Those are the people that "purchased" preference points. I have never heard of someone with 1 PP not drawing - when the apply for the tag, not just the preference point. My logic would apply to residents. Probably wouldn't apply to non-res. But if you are a resident, you must be doing something wrong.

As a resident you would draw a Southern general deer tag with 1 point, but as a non-resident it takes 4 or 5.

I just applied for Utah - basically to just start building some points. Last question though: I put in for LE elk, general deer season, and once in a lifetime drawing. This will get me 1 bonus point for LE, 1 preference point for general deer, and 1 bonus point for OIL. My question is: that bonus point I got for LE elk: it that a bonus point solely for LE elk, or can that bonus point be used for any LE hunt? - what if I change my mind after 10 bonus points and would rather use them for deer instead of elk is my concern.
Thanks

You can not use your elk bonus points for any other species. In Utah they are species specific bonus points. I have 10 Elk points right now and wish I could transfer them to deer but I can not.

Good luck in the draw.

FYI and to clarify info given by "thebuckstopshere". In 2006 the southern region had 12,273 successful resident applicants. The remaining permits are allocated to Lifetime License holders and Dedicated Hunters. Odds for 2006 were 1:1.8. In 2007, only 10,243 tags went to hunters in the general season draw. Again the rest were allocated to LL Holders and DH's. The odds for 2007 were 1:2.3. I personnaly know several people who have gone two years without getting a tag, and finally drew this year on their third try, and no, they didn't screw up their application.
