Colorado Northwest

I live in New Mexico and I'll be hunting for a cow elk the first season (11-15 Oct) up in the north western portion of Colorado areas 11-13, 24-26, 33 & 34, 131, 211, 231. I've looked at the maps and can only come up with maybe around the southern Flat tops Wilderness boundary. I've never been in that country so I'm wondering if anyone would mind pointing in the right direction. I'm not afraid to walk 5 mile or so and am in the shape to do it. Unit 12 is also appealing because of the high success rate and limited access due to private property. Certainly I don't want your honey hole and if you'd prefer to e-mail me direct I'll keep the info to myself and let you know what I get into upon return. I also just returned from hunting Idaho's south eastern country for elk. Would trade info if desired. Have alot of good info for New Mex elk too.

Thanks

There are a lot of elk in the Flat Tops, if your willing to walk in a few miles, you shouldn't have any problem finding a cow.
Check maps for roads that will take you up into the high country near the wilderness and hike in from there.
Last year we saw lots of trucks comming out from the eastern side with elk in the back, we also saw elk on the southern side.

If you're heading up there through Rifle, CO, stop in to Tim's Tools and get some info....they have always been helpful to hunters new to the area.

I hunt in unit 24 and will be up there 1st season as well. The area around Buford (North and South) has good elk in it as well as deer.

Try the area South of Buford, Hiner Springs. I hunted there last year and saw cows in the timber. We hunt North of Buford now, near Sleepy Cat Peak...good elk numbers there as well.

I have always hunted 2nd season and the herds were broken up by 1st season so, "If you can't beat them, join em."

That is alot of units to choose from. Habitat is going to vary like crazy. Pick a few areas that vary in topography then let the weather help you decide. The area west of Sheriff reservoir isnt bad. I believe that is unit 231 south of Oak Creek (s. of Steamboat)

Thanks to all, we've narrowed it down to the north end of the mass of units but have 2 or 3 places to weed out. Lord willing I'll be heading up there a few days early so we'll be able to look the areas over and settle on one area.

West of Sherrif's? That must be the Bunker Bssin areaa. While Sherrif's is in 231, the area west sits right on the border of 231 and 12. Doesn't matter if you're hunting during the regular rifle season. 12 is a draw area during the earlier primitive seasons.
