Talk about Strange

I'm hoping to get the guy to post a frame off the video, but if not, here goes: ran into a guy tonight that had found a dead 6-point bull in Buck Hollow. The dang thing somehow got stuck in between the forks of a double-trunked aspen tree ( and I'm talking about the 30-plus diameter aspen trees). It is clear he beat himself silly trying to escape, but in the end died right there. What's wierd is trying to figure out how in the hell he ended up there. I've never seen anything like it.

Oh, and if the person that later tonight went in and sawed off the antlers visits this site;

YOU ARE A DUMBASS. THEY HAVE YOUR LICENSE PLATE, I HOPE YOU ENJOY YOUR STAY AT THE WASATCH COUNTY JAIL.

This goes for the idiot that hindshot the 6X7 in the West Fork of the Duchesne. You'll be happy to know that the bull died a very painful slow death. Jerk!

How come he couldn't take the antlers? It died of natural causes... Albiet a slow and painful one.

Thats pretty cool to get to see. I would really like to see the pictures too.

It is illegal to possess antlers with skull attached in Utah (other than the ones taken during a hunt). since the bull is considered 'trophy status', it's kinda serious! They did away with the ability to possess natural kills because poachers were taking advantage of it by killing an animal, then leaving the body in the elements for a time until it looked like a 'natural death'. And the natural causes thing hasn't been determined in this case, but it looks that way.

It was sad, you could see on the video where he had rubbed his hide raw trying to get out. We were thinking that maybe he got shoved through the tree during a fight or something. The 'v' in the tree is clearly not big enough for him to get his rack through frontways, so we are still trying to figure it out!

Learn something new everyday...

So do you have to have the license on the rack, or how do you determine that it was taken leagally during a hunt? Couldn't you say, I shot that ten years ago and lost the license? Seems like a way to keep the honest guy honest and the poachers out of jail...

Damn poachers... The funny thing is you have the guys license plate that took the rack, I hope they nail his butt...

Gota feel sorry for that poor bull. Was he possibly rubbing on one of the trees, got a little excited and got tangled up? That is kind of strange how he got tangled up like that.

Me and My buddy found something kinda similar this past week. We were hiking around through some aspens and we came upon a bull moose that had got stuck inbetween a "v" like shape in these trees and probably died a slow death too. It's pretty sad but on the other hand it's pretty interesting to find something like that. We both believe he might have been scraping some of the velvet off of his antlers because the rack on him didn't seem to be fully developed. It was close but not quite as developed as it should have been. We took some pics and I will post them as soon as possible.

p.s. Has anyone done any good on the elk hunt here in Utah? I saw a 4x5 killed on Saturday morning but that's the only bull I have seen. I am heading up today and am staying in an area for a week. Hopefully I'll get something. Good luck to you all.

I have to tell you something strange too. My buddy was hunting along a ridge and completely blew two bulls out of their beds. He couldn't do anything but watch as they were hauling butt away thru the timber. All of a sudden he saw one of the bulls do a backflip and lay still. He walked up and found the bull dead as can be. Come to find out he had caught his rack in a tree and kept on going which broke his neck and died instantly. Weird huh? Gary

Those are some crazy stories. Did your buddy tag the bull that broke his neck?

Gary, was this in Utah, 'cuz I heard something very similar from another elk hunter this last weekend. I guess bulls die in combat more than we know, huh.

I recall seeing a very interesting photo in Bugle magazine with an accompanying story, it was quite old but made some sense. The photo was of a big 6-point bull tangled up under a mule still tied to a rope corral line, both of them dead. The story went that during the night, the mules starting braying like crazy, the hunters heard quite a ruckus and assumed it was a grizzly, so they stayed away. In the morning they found their mule dead, gored in the night by the bull. The mule fell on top of the bull, breaking the bull's neck and killing him as well.

Any other strange predicaments to share out there?

It was in the laramie river area of colorado and yes he tagged it although it was a tough decision for him. Gary

A friend of mine jumped a big bull during a snowy day on the general deer hunt. As it spooked, it slipped on some wet icy rocks and broke its leg. I guess it was just kind of dangling below the knee. They got the CO to go take care of it for them, but it ruined their hunt. As weird as it sounds, it is sad to see them die natural deaths (I guess this one was influenced by man). It always seems like it is slow and painful. Seeing winter kills when the snow breaks usually tears me up, always looks like alot of agony. The best thing would be for every animal to live about 10-12 years then get taken by a hunter - nice full life and a quick death.

This is not an elk story, but it happened here in VA this past saturday to a friend. Bow season for whitetails opened and a 4 point buch and 5 does came w/in range of my friend. He shot and spined the buck. When the does took off to run after the shot, one doe ran over another and broke the other doe's back! my friend had two deer down , but only one arrow was shot and only one deer hit.

I seconf that. It always seems like the ones that get hit by cars and survive for awile after have a tuff time. I would rather go out quik then live on life support, thats for sure!

While elk hunting a few years ago I came across something weird. Walking through a small basin with a creek running down the middle of it, there was a section of the creek that disappeared underground and reappeared 50 yds down stream. A sink hole opened up when a calf walked over the covered stream and swallowed up the elk.

I found an elk that had got one of his feet tangled in wire. He then walked around a tree untill it was tight and died. It was a perfect 7x7. I took it and show the pictures and the head to the warden and he let me keep it.

i remember thi story and that was a hell of a story and picture it was pretty cool. these are some awesome stories. i like the one about the bull running and breaking his neck thats 1 in a 1,000,000,000

Several years back I found a descent buck that had gotten caught in a big mudslide and the only thing sticking out were the top of his head and one side of his rack. The mud had solidified and was like rock, making getting the antlers off it impossible. It's still there many years later.

a friend of mine found a real nice 6x6 with real good mass wrapped around a tree, with skull still attached.he managed to get it off without damaging it.he kept it around the house a few years and then sold it to some bar here in colo. for $3500. jeff

when i was a kid we were on a frends ranch and went partying one night then next morning we were late heading out hunting the other hunters went out ahead of us we went to one pasture and found the other hunters had shut the gate which wasn't ever shut and tangled up in the gate was a 3x3 whitetail was a easy hunt and let us harrass the other hunters about tieing them up for us

There are some shots in the book Elk Tactics, where they rope a live bull that was stuck in a wallow and pulled it out with horses.

There's some pretty amazing things out there some times. That wallow above was more like a well! What a great bull too.

Cheers,
Pete
