I went out yesterday deer hunting North of Douglas, Wyoming in the Thunder Basin National Grasslands. All of the deer areas around there are bucks only. We have gone out there one time previously last week and between the two trips did not see a buck deer a 1. Now this is were the elk come in. Last week a seen herd with 15 cows and calves, 1 4x4 bull, and a massive 7x7! Then my dad and I let another lone, monster 7x7 rake branches just yards from use! Next on the way out 2 spikes and a cow ran 30yds in front of use and stopped. They stood there long enough for me to get out of the truck, walk around, get my dads camera and take a pic! Yesterday my dad and I bumped into 3 calves trying to cross the fence to their momma that saw use at about 15 yards and just stood their. Out on the other side, about 150 to 200 yards stood the herd of 5 spikes, a 2 point, and a 4x4. The only cow was that one. I also saw a large bull way off in the distance and my cuz and I walked to within 150yds of a descent 6x6 that new we were there! Now get this. No bucks, bucks only area. Tons of elk (and bulls up the yang) the area is special permit 40 license, cow only. That sucks. Even though we did not get any deer, or see a buck at that, the elk, and being with my hunting buds made the trip worth while. I just wish I could hunt elk there!
