My first Elk

I just found this website yesterday and I must say that I love it, I love reading about hunting successes and experiences, I know the Utah Elk hunt Started nearly 2 weeks ago but since I found this website I thought I would share my story with all of you about the Elk I got this year (which happens to be my first Elk) I got my Elk at about 9 a.m on Saturday(Oct. 4)in what seems to be one of Utah dwindling any bull areas that you don't have to draw out to hunt in while we were making a small hike to a place which our party had decided to meet were we had heard bugling the day before so we spread out into three groups me & my uncle, my dad & his friend (it was my dads friends 1st elk hunt and definately after this hunt won't be his last)and my other uncle was going to hike along a fence line road (because of a bad knee) incase anything got pushed up to the fence, while the rest of us snuck throught the trees and into the small meadows on our way to our meeting spot which was about 3 miles from start point, so about 1.5 miles into our hike me and my uncle jumped 2 cows just outside of a really big meadow so we decided to sneak up to this meadow thinking that maybe they would run through the edge of it and that maybe there would be a bull with them so it took us 3 minutes if even that to get to the edge of the trees to the meadow and we were watching the tree line to the west of the meadow with our guns down ready to shoot if anything came out, when I caught a glimpse of a flash to the east of the meadow, I looked over and saw and saw an elk come runinng out of the east side of the meadow he got to the edge of the meadow and turned towards us cause he wasn't about ready to risk running across the open meadow, when he caught a glimpse or a smell of us and put on the brakes and froze just as he turned toward us. So I dropped to my butt put my gun (300 win mag) up and as soon as saw antlers I pulled the trigger even though it was a head on shot instead of the prefered brod side I just figured I better shoot before he could turn back into the trees and run. I didn't care how big he was or how small to me it was a bull elk, although I must say I did hope he was big, but being the first Elk I have ever got a shot atand maybe even the first bull close enough to shoot at that wasen't on the dead run through the trees since I started carrying a gun when I was 14 and I am now 23 so for 9 years, I didn't care how big he was. I had so much adrenilan pumping that I didn't get the shakes like I always imagined i would and I didn't even flinch when I pulled the trigger, I just pulled the trigger and saw him drop. I then got up and saw him laying there on the ground about 150 yards away and thought yahooooo, turned to my uncle and he was like nice put his hand up and gave me five we started walking down to him and the shakes finally kicked in, when I saw him drop I new he wasen't a spike I thought maybe he was a raghorn 4 point but when we got about 100 yards from him he started trying to lift his head up and I was amazed cause he dropped so hard and how I shot I thought I would have atleast hit his vitals so when got about 10 yards he gave it one last push he got up and charged at my uncle (not a very good charge though because for some reason the bullet hit him in the top of the chest went in hit his ribs then turned and lodged into his shoulder shatterin the bone) luckily my uncle dodged him then he just dropped and was dead)it was crazy I had never seen anything like it I had seen my dad shoot several elk and my uncle and we were just amazed by this but anyway I know this is long and I don't know if anyone will even read all the way through but he turned out to be a pretty nice 6 x 6, he wasen't huge but for my first elk I am a happy boy he's bigger than any of the other elk anyone in my family has ever gotten (mostly 5 point) but it was awesome to be able to be up in the mountains with some of the people that matter most like family and friends, and to gain experiences that will last a lifetime even if I didn't get the elk I would have still had an awesome time, just being there with my dad and uncles, and that is what hunting is all about getting away and having a good time. I'll try to have a picture posted later today or tommorrow, thanks for reading this and thanks for all of your guys experiences that I have read.
