LAST EDITED ON Oct-20-03 AT 09:34AM (MST)[p]Even though this guys rack is pretty scragley, believe it or not he is a 5x5 and considering it was the last day with few elk beeing seen I figured I better take what I could get for some meat. I was actually expecting a cow!

Anyways, I found this poor little guy down in his bed around noon on the last day of first rifle hunt in Colorado. We ate lunch and just dropped off a steep ridge full of quakies. Of course we knew we had to get into the dark timber so I just dropped right off and headed straight into the timber about halfway down the ridge.

It was somewhat noisy walking but fortunately we had somewhat a stiff breeze which was causing some noise as well so I don't think he could hear us as well as usual. My hunting partner was above me just off the rim of the ridge as we were paralleling. I only snuck through the timber for probably 5 minutes (50 yards) when all of the sudden I seen his big ol butt shining in the sun. I knew it was an elk but only had a very small window between two trees (and of course a butt shot was not what I wanted). I took two steps forward (between my window of trees to stay somewhat hidden as well).

He was only around 80 yards away at this point, he then stood up and looked back (more up the ridge towards my partner. I knew he either heard, seen or smelled me or my partner and I knew he was getting ready to haul butt. Also when he stood up I unfortunately saw his horns and started shaking like an 18 year old virgin in a whorehouse.

After a couple of deep breaths (quick deep breaths) before he took off. I drilled him right in the back of the neck as he was pretty much facing away from me looking back over his shoulder. He dropped right there 4 feet from his bed. Of course when I first seen his butt to the time I took the shot was only like 10-15 seconds but felt like much longer than that.

It was an awesome hunt with awesome weather (even though we didn't see that many elk). We got to put in quite a few miles walking and seen some beautiful country. I hunted quite a bit with my father in laws lifetime friend mostly as my father in law has been having some minor health issues and was not able to do too much huntig. He is a great guy and fun to hunt with. He took a cow (like every year he hunts with us) on the third day and was pretty stoked. He caught her coming through the some AWESOME dark timber, the trees were so slick (hardly any branches so you could see quite aways through the timber),no trashy trees you know? No downfall so you could sneak through there pretty decently.

Even though no monsters were taken, 2 out of 3 tags is not too bad and we have plenty of meat for the next year!

The ridge on the right is where I took my bull.

And of course, heres Cinnamon (my wife named her) who might of had her last year as our pack horse as she is pushing 23 years old! But she is the most awesome little horse I have ever been around. she saved us lots of work as well.

Dutch,

Great Job? Congrats!

That country looks familiar. Did you have any wild-west rodeos with ol' Cinnamon or is that another horse?

No rodeos, well almost with the cow. We were trying to load it onto 'Jimmy' our other horse and he wasn't really up to it. He did alot better with my bull though. We always say our hunt is successful if Jimmy doesn't kill anyone! hehe.

Too dang hot though, we went up yesterday Oct 19 and it must of been 75 degrees up there! Makes the elk hunting tough.

beautiful place, nice bull! congrats! 2 out of 3 still isn't bad!

horses sure save alot of time!

congrats!

Congrates on a great hunt! I would have shot that bull in a heart beat, nothing wrong with just putting meat on the table.
