Looking toward next year. Does anyone have any experience in these units? What is top end size of bulls? Would it be worth burning preference points for a blackpowder hunt?

I don't know much about unit 69 but unit 84 does have large bulls over 380. Although much of the land that houses bulls of this class are either on private or outfitter leased land. The public access places that I know of in this unit typically produce average bulls up to 300. It does take at least two points to draw a muzzleloader bull in either area. If you are looking for a guided hunt contact sangre di cristo outfitters. I believe its www.sangreoutfitters.com

I've hunted 69/84, don't set your heart on a big bull unless you have access to lots of private land.

tbolt,

What is your opinion on the deer hunting in unit 84, many big bucks? What are some of the largest bulls you seen taken on public land in 84?

Deer hunting in 69/84 (public land) is like much of the state, not what it used to be. Big bucks? a few. Many big bucks? no.
There are some nice bulls that come out of the area. a 300 inch bull would be a very nice public land elk out of this area. Bigger bulls have come out of the area, but just as with most areas these bulls are the exception not the rule.

My friend hunts 69 every year for the last 15 years. Usuallly somebody kills a bull in his party (about 10 dudes) that will go over 300. They hunt anywhere from the 1st rifle (elk only) to 4th season. I'll have to get an ok from him on details first before I pass them on. They hunt deer there as well and usually fill out, but they kill the first 1 with antlers and occasionly they get a good buck.
