Utah LE

I was just wanting opinions on the best chance for a guy to draw a Utah LE elk tag. I have 3 bonus pts, and am sick of general season hunting. I don't need a true monster, but a decent 6x6 would be nice to have a crack at. what unit do you guys think?

Your best odds are an archery hunt, or muzzle loader hunt. They are all very very poor odds. 1-20 to 1-50.
All units have good bulls.

I thought about trying my bow, but I prefer to rifle hunt. I have a new gun I want to get blood on next year.

Get in line! There are 60,000 people ahead of you with 3 points or more.

Your points mean absolutely nothing until you are highest point holder applying for a permit. About the time you get 45 points you might, just might be the highest point holder applying.

There are 80,000 point holders in Utah. There are 1000 LE permits per year. It's basically a 60% chance in your or my kids life of drawing.

Cheers,
Pete

Yeah, so put in for AR301 and then you can have the chance to draw every year while Pete and his kids have to wait their whole lifetime. (I just couldn't resist Pete)

The La Sals have better odds and decent elk, but just look at the odds when they come out next year. Good Luck and don't hold your breath 'til you draw a tag; You'll go blue.

I realize the odds are slim. I just wanted to know which units were the best.

I put in for limited Muzzleloader. Better odds and the bulls are in full rut.

Any unit will suffice. For southern monsters try Pahvant, Beaver, Dutton, Monroe, Indian Peaks, San Juan, etc. For Central monsters try the Wasatch, Manti, et al. Just keep putting in and hopefully you'll draw. Just don't get discouraged with all the rejection letters year after year after year after year. P.S. Try the archery hunts.

I have a friend who drew nonresident Pansagunt rifle deer last year, and drew a nonresident Central Manti bull elk tag this year with no points! No B.S.! Lucky &$#$%@#!! He killed a 354 bull this year. Anyway, there is hope with no points.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-30-03 AT 01:07PM (MST)[p]If you apply and get the Wasatch tag, I'd be willing to share my "secret spot" with you. I'd even tag along to help with the hunt. I drew the tag this year and hunted the same area I've hunting for over twenty years (spike only for the last number of years) and have found and marked on my gps all the bedding areas, wallows etc. If you haven't already, take a look at the area in the hunting video I posted in this forum.
