i took a friend of mine from work on his first successful elk hunt on saturday. it's just a 2x3 bull; brow tines are about 12 inches long and the beams are about 3 feet long. strange rack, but he'll eat awesome!

i shot the bull, then it trotted about 50 yards into view of my partner and he shot it, too (he didn't know if i had shot at this bull or one of the cows that was with him, it was an either sex area). the bull stopped, stood there for a count of 10, then fell over, stiff legged and dead. the way it tipped over was almost like a cartoon. our shots hit it in the vitals within 5 inches of each other. it took all day to debone it and pack it out 2.5 miles and i'll admit i'm a bit sore...but i'd do it again right now if i could.

fun fun fun

did you both have tags, if you both shot at the same bull im assuming you both had tags, did he/you fill the other tag as well? lets see the pictures of the bull(s)

yes, we both had tags.

in that particular unit you can buy a tag at wally world or wherever licenses are sold and shoot either a cow or a bull (any elk, actually). my friend tagged the bull and we spent the rest of the weekend backpacking it out and butchering it so i did not get an elk (yet!).

pics are on a disposable camera that will be used up by the end of the month so i'll post a pic or two then.

Fun stuff hah Berto! I was standing with a buddy when he drilled a cow this weekend. Then we slid her about 1 mile whole to the truck, then drug her down the snow covered road to camp! Boned her out completely within the confines of a wood heated wall tent. Ahhh, the life!

Congrats!

thought i'd follow up with a pic.

berto,
Was this bull your friends that you talked about earlier? Did you ever fill your tag? Nice long left beam there for sure.

brian,

yeah, the first post of this thread describes what happened on the hunt that day.

no, i didn't get a bull of my own because i caught the bad crud the week of thanksgiving and was couch/bed ridden for a full week. i did have a kitchen pass in hand that week, too, darn it.

i just hope my wife honors that kitchen pass next year (i won't hold my breath!).

your right that is a unusual rack. looks like he rhad some good potential. my grandfather took a bull almost exactly like that afew years back when i killed my first bull. he just didnt have the lenght on the eye guards. he sure did eat well, but not as good as my spike that year or the cow the next year!

Berto,

Man, bring some of that tender stuff down to antler camp this spring and we will have a feast. Tell your buddy congrats, looks like you guys had fun.

Elkseeker,

you can bet that i'm already thinking about looking for sheds! i never got down that way during hunting season...

the meat-bull has tender steaks, and the jerky has been awesome!

Berto,

Enjoy that good meat. Hope to see you down there this year, looks like we will be down there around 1 or 2 April. As it gets closer, I will keep in contact.
