well i have killed my bull down in idaho so i am know hunting my new home in montana, very new home. i am thinkingabout an opening week "rifle" hunt down in the little belt area, neihart sulpher springs area. has anyone ever hunted that country? what can i expect as numbers of elk, and hunting pressure. i went out on a day trip outa kalispell today and had a bull going crazy but he would not come in more that 60 yard, which makes me wonder if traveling that far from home would be worth it??? amyways that me question...

The Belts will have a lot of guys on opening day, the majority of which will be driving roads and walking short distances. The elk typically get hammered on the private and are run ragged after opening week. I usually wait until the snow flies and when a lot of the guys have given up.

you can apply this anywhere on the rifle opener for elk: find some public next to private, take a pre-season hike a couple miles into the public above the private land, find a natural funnel point (usually a saddle on a ridge or a bowl where two ridges come together), in the dark opening morning hike to the funnel point, sit and wait...when the elk come running through the saddle or into the bowl from the lower private ground on their way to higher ground on the public land, ambush them.

good luck
