It does not appear many hunters know much about this area for you never see any posts on it. I will be hunting it hard this October and would like to hear from anyone that has hunted it in the last few years. Thanks for any replies in advance.

You are right not much is talked about this unit. Seem to remember though that you need good weather (SNOW) to get the big ones out of Utah and higher ranges into the area.
Just a guess, but later the better I would think. Good luck.

Drove through that stretch of highway a umber of times and never really paid much attention to it that much. There are some BIG ranches around there though, may have Forest landlocked?

I was up there for one day last year. I went up there to help a friend fill a bull elk tag but when I got there he already had it in camp. He told me that he and his hunting partners had seen some very nice deer and plenty of them. He camped at Goose Creek and the deer were in the surrounding low hills. Keep in mind that this hunt was in November but there was very little snow. I assume that you have an October rifle tag? I don't know if they would be in the same place in October. fatrooster.

For starters,I'd hunt the Last Week,so as not to be overrun by the 149 cow elk hunters, that maybe near by ??? If above advise doesn't work,or more area is needed try above Crittenden Res and around Mill Crk,also look at Schoolhouse Canyon areas --- Good Luck

Azbiggame is correct. Hunted this unit in 99 with a friend and stayed at Montello. School teacher there named Paul, he knows about everything that swims, flies, crawls or walks in that area. Gas stations are few in that area, Montello or Jackpot. You may also want to check Dairy Valley Cyn., as well as the areas just to the west of Crittenden Res. Never had much luck to the north of unit. Watch the Ut. border, it is clearly marked and they will be watching you. The head of Schoolhouse Cyn. was great and keep an eyeout for serviceberry, the bucks love it. Good Luck

I had a junior tag in 98, doe in 99, and a buck tag in 02. 98 and 99, lots of deer. 02, very few. We hunted primarily in the north 1/4 of the unit. Not a lot of deer up there, more elk and antelope. We have not put in for 081 since then, and hunt 10 for deer now. Best advice I could give is hunt late. Even then that may not be enough before the rifle season closes.

Later,

Marcial

The unit is still on fire as we speak 80,000 acres worth. Most of the area around Critenden is toast at the moment. For what it is worth we did see some monster bucks leaving the country while out there.
