LAST EDITED ON Dec-29-03 AT 07:55PM (MST)[p]The CA state record Black Bear came from this same Ranch, I think in 2001 or 02 it was over 600 lbs, if I remember correctly.
The only fences on that ranch are 5 strand barbed wire. Afterall, it is a working cattle ranch, too. Only about an 1 1/2 hour drive from me, but can't come close to be able to afford it. PC
There are also Roosevelt Elk up the very northern western part of CA. In the northeastern part there are Rocky Mtn. and southern part are Tule. The Grizzly Island are Tule too. Not sure what species are on Fort Hunter Liggett.
Here close to where I live over at Tomalas Bay area, it is Tule.
Think I have this right, but could be corrected if I am wrong.
From what I have been told the elk on Tejon Ranch are of the Rocky Mtn. sub-species and as stated earlier they were transplanted years ago to an adjoining ranch where they escaped and flourished. As it is, California Fish and Game will not let the owners import any more elk to freshen the gene pool, because they are not native I think? I am not quite sure why.
Sad part is, there was a big article in the local newspaper stating that the ranch may soon be cut into chunks and sold for guess what...houses, what a pity! Currently, Tejon Ranch is the largest parcel of private property in the entire state and one of the few remaining wildlife corridors from the Pacific Ocean to the inland Desert. Not to mention, the ranch is very important habitat for the California Condor.

Are you talking HEAVIEST black bear record or measured animal by B&C? I may be wrong but isn't the state record black bear also the world record shot in Mendocino County, CA by Robert Shuttleworth Jr.? Just wondering if another big one was shot is all.
Then I came across an artical in Trophy Hunter Mag Fall-1 2002 issue awhile back and there's the story about that guy and his hunt. I don't have a scanner, but in the photo the bear is big...real big!
The artical states that the featured bear had an estimated weight of over 500 lbs. and it scored 20 4/16.
Aparently the same guy had an earlier hunt on the same ranch and got a 450 pounder that scored 20 15/16, but there is no mention of any records B&C, state, or otherwise for either bear, so I am guessing that neither bear quite measured up.
I hope this is the info you were looking for. Sorry for the confusion.
The B&C record was a pick-up at 23 10/16" (Utah) and the P&Y record killed in CA was 23 3/16" as noted above. 20 & change is a good bear, but just barely makes B&C and is not even in the same class as the record bears.
Pretty sure the Hunter Ligget elk are Tule. Saw them back in '88 lying under the shade of an oak tree. That tree was 10 ft off the road that ended the hunting zone. They'd stay there all day and cross the road to feed at night and be back under that tree every morning. Anybody that says they don't know when the season starts doesn't hunt.
On a side note you guys heard about the monster bull harvested in NE Cal?
Just kind of curious on this bull at Tejon. If it's not native to the state and is transplanted in, how does B&C recognize it and allow it into the books? I thought it had to be a native species. It seems that when an animal is transplanted in, it's easily too possible for it to come from a game ranch, otherwise where would the get it from.
