Pennsylvania has a small but huntable population of elk. They have recently opened up an elk season to the lucky few who can draw a tag. Because they have been left alone and unhunted since the 20s we have got some awesome bulls running around. Here is a picture of a 9 x 10 non typical that a guy took with his Knight ML this year. I tought you guys would appreciate this monster!

Nice bull! Thanks for posting Iron Buck. What's the estimated herd size in Pennsylvania?

BOHNTR )))----------->

I think the herd is around 1200 animals. They only give out about 80 tags a year and of those only 20 are bull tags, We have had the season for about 3 years now and of course I......along with 50,000 others! have applied. Where else can I hunt elk for $10 ??? They just started to give preferance points this year so if I keep at it maybe I will eventually draw. If I did get drawn I'd hunt them with either my bow of my 54cal flintlock. It would be a great hunt. There are LOTS of big bulls in the herd.

That's a great Bull no matter where it was taken. What part of Penn. is this herd located? That picture showing the river behind could have been bad if the Elk had gotten out there and then expired.
Great pictures and thanks for posting them.

That is one AWESOME bull for sure! WOW!!! That country does look pretty thick too. Looks like some fun huntin'.

The elk herd here is located up in the North Central part of the state. It is steep and thick country but no where near as tall as the Rockies. Lots of public land up there with large roadless tracks of ground. This is where our native Eastern elk made their last stand. The last one was killed off by market hunters back in the late 1800s. Some time during the early part of the century we had about 20 elk brought in from the Rockies. They actually flourished for a while and were hunted up until the 20s. After that they were pretty much left alone. Recently....the herd has been doing very well. The numbers increased enough that farmers in the area were complaining about crop damage. So the Game Commission has brought the hunting season back. Even in PA where we have over 1 million hunters and the population is generally supportive to hunters and hunting the antis put up a stink. Thank God we shut them down and the season goes on.

Nice bull, we just wrestled in Las Vegas against some teams from PA man those boys are tough, saw some of the top kids in the nation. Easton Area, Red Lion area, Upper Penn Area, they was all good teams.

Great bull.. That isn't by chance a Roosevelt is it???. I live in Washington state and it looks alot like a Roosevelt...

I thought it looked like a Roosevelt too. Hum???

either way, it's a great bull...congrats to the hunter who harvested this animal.

While it does have Roosevelt characteristics, the elk that were brought here to rebuild the herd were Rocky Mountain elk. I am pretty sure they came from Yellowstone. I will check to be sure if they did in fact come frm Wyoming.

Most of the big bulls here die of old age. Many of the biggest and oldest bulls start to get these knarly non typical antlers. I am not exactly sure why but they look awesome!

GATOR:

PA is a BIG wrestleing area. My roomate in College (Penn State of course :) ) was a state champion. He is now in teh special forces and over in Iraq....I am sure those Iraqi's don't ant to tangle with him. He is ONE BAD DUDE!

That is an awesome bull, but lets give thanks to the real trophies, the roommate and the son who are over seas serving our country.

Is that an isolated herd or can they breed with other herds ? the horn growth looks unique from the elk I've seen.
love those multiple points.

YA THATS A NICE 'RACK'

ONE B_F_E_ LOOKING AT ANOTHER B_F_E_!!!

THE ONLY bobcat STARING AT NICE 'RACKS'!!!

We only have what is considered one herd. It is located in North Centrap PA spread out over several counties. Most of the bulls have more typical antlers but it seems that many of the older ones develop some real nice non-typical racks.
