I've been reading this site off and on for a couple years now and finally registered so if I ask a question that's already been dealt with go easy on me.

Anyway, my partners and I have been hunting elk/muleys north of Yellowstone (without an outfitter) for a few years with pretty good success. didn't draw this last season but in Fall of 02 I nearly walked right into a heard of wolves a couple miles north of the park. Anybody out there hunt that area this year and know what game numbers are like? How is this spread of wolves out of the park affecting success? I've been hearing disturbing rumblings and am starting to plan for our fall hunt.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

I live sixty miles north of Yellowstone park the wolves are still here and the herd of them is expanding rapidly. I dont know the success rate they had on elk around Gardiner this year but the elk count for 2003 was way down from previous years in the northern yellowstone heard. There are still elk to be had but it seems they are moving lower down on more private land, the late season hunt just started this weekend so the next six weeks should tell how the elk have been affected. Thanks for the info. A couple years ago we ran into a guy that is a biologist in the park. I'll have to call him and see what the count is. I appreciate any info from locals though since they seem to have a better handle on success rates. I love hunting that area around Tom Minor and above Jardine but I hate to go through the effort and major expense if the wolves have screwed up the odds around there.

thanks again
