How's D-13?

My Dad and I used to hunt D-13. We'd take off out of Apache Canyon off of 33 and pack in about 2 miles Southeast. We haven't hunted it in about 7 years or so. Has any of you done any good out there the last couple of years? We have taken a few nice 3x3's but nothing really big. Some years we'd see lots of deer and then the next year get skunked and not see any. Just curious. Thanks

Steve

Try to see if you can squeeze some info out of D13er here, I think that is where he gets his name from.

I know he's here somewhere but I'm not sure how often this "California" area gets looked at. I'll be patient. Thanks

LAST EDITED ON Oct-05-07 AT 12:37PM (MST)[p]John- Have you ever hunted around Yellow Jacket Springs? It is about a mile and a half walk South of the Apache/Long Canyon area. We are thinking of giving D-13 another shot next year. Like I said, it is kind of an "iffy" area because sometimes we find deer and sometimes we dont. We will usually pack in for a couple of days. What do you think? We have seen several 3x3's in there but no 4x4's. Is that the norm?

I have not hunted around there we go up a couple of miles and hunt to the north we seen a nice 3x3 last year around 20 inches i know there is some big ones my friend killed a 23 inch 4x4 out of there about 8 years ago it seems that it has alot of presure now days in there. have you seen any bears up there at all.

We've never seen a bear but have seen tracks and bear crap. I think that area is really hit and miss for deer. You really have to hunt around water and I don't think there is too much of it around. Luckily the spring that we hunt around is a few mile hike in that not a lot of people want to "pack in". We've never seen any 4x4's but have taken 2 nice 3x3's and my first buck was a little forkie. Back then we'd cut the deer in half and haul on half out at a time. It was not fun. I don't know why we just didn't bone them out? Thanks for the info.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-09-07 AT 09:25PM (MST)[p]I live on the coast in a city called Santa Maria. It is about an hour North of Santa Barbara. It takes us about an hour and a half to get to Apache Canyon. Where are you from? Have you ever hunted the South side?

It's right in your backyard then. I've heard of guys going from the backside (I guess the Northeast side) of those mountains. You ever hunt the backside? I think it is called Elk Pass? Is that right?

Here is my D13 buck from today.

Congratulations! He was almost a 3x3 it looks like. Did you see very many deer? How many days did you hunt? My daughter just passed her hunter safety course and I want to take her rabbit hunting. My Dad and I used to hunt Apache Canyon for rabbits. It seemed like the rabbit population would fluctuate every 3 to 4 years. Are there a lot of rabbits out there this year? Also, read the post just before you posted your picture. Congratulations again!
