To Fix Or Not To Fix?

I have some pics of my Nv bull I shot in '02. Its busted pretty bad and I am not sure if I want to fix the tines or not. It is a big bull busted, but an even bigger bull intact. I would like to get your oppinions on this. If someone will help me I can send you a few pics and you could post them. How big do the pics have to be and what format?

I'd leave it as is... I think fixing points detracts from the charater of the rack. Very seldom can a point be fixed that can't be noticed. When I see a rack thats been fixed I think that the owner is trying to make something out of the rack that its not. Unless you have pictures of before and after, there is no way of telling what the rack would have looked like anyway with any certainty.

hell, fix it if you want to. it's up to you. score it first tho. a guy i hunted with this past fall shot a huge Az. bull. nets over 360 with both 3rd points and part of one 4th point busted off. would have easily netted over 400. had a really mangy cape. he's gonna have it repaired and mounted with a winter time cape. it all depends on what you want to do. a good taxidermist can fix a point to where you won't ever know it. pretty amazing what they can do. look at some of these phony racks guys are having mounted.

NV4, if it bothers you enough to be thinking about go ahead and get'em fixed. If it done right no one will know but you.....

RLH, my Uncle sent me the photo's of that busted up 360" this morning. Broken or not he's a damn nice bull.....I'd leave'em as is, adds character.....

I do have a video of him before he was busted. I would like to have him fixed so that he would look like he did when he was in his prime. But then again I feel that if I have him fixed I am cheating myself cause it wasn't the way he was when I shot him. If he wasn't busted he would score right at 390.

I think that you should take a couple of sheds from your brother the horker cut off the brow tines on the Rock shed, and fix it. I just got done fixing my brothers and it just adds so much more the the mount, but that is just an opinion.

I agree with you Whistle!!! But do you think my brother would let me "have" a set, or let alone chop one up? Especially one of his bigger sets. You know he would charge me more then anyone else for those sheds. I guess the BLM is going to use your brothers bull and my bull for there booth at RMEF this year in Reno.

yea that is what Paul Said. Is your bull going to be done by then? I would hook you up with some points but everything that I have that can be used to cut up already is. What is your e-mail adress Nick I have a couple decent still shots of your bull alive?

I personally wouldn't fix it. It will always have a slight feeling of not being the same bull. That is what the bull was when he was shot. Proves he was a fighter and King of the hill. Adding some bondo or points from a different bull would just make him have a slight false feeling.

My friend shot a buck last year that had broken a cheater off. I went to look at the mount when he got it back and there is a "new" 6 inch cheater. Wasn't the buck's antler, just a recreation. Even my friend had doubts of whether he should leave the new bone on his buck. He spent more time explaing why he had it done then telling me about the deer.

BUT, do what you want - you are the only one that matters. Good luck.

NVguide & NV4life, why would the horker let you destroy some of his sheds to fix your bull when the sheds are bigger than your bull. You've got to be out of your mind.

Fix it. I have some 390 sheds, one side is missing its G2 and G3. I'm going to have them fixed and mounted soon. Any pic's?

Downsouth - Well the set that the "Horker" has isn't as big as my bull. He has 2 sets off of the same bull. And the smaller of the 2 isn't as big as my bull if my bull wasn't busted. But is has perfect brow tines for my bull.

AntlerKing - there are 2 pics posted of my bulls mount on the general hunt page. its NV4Life's big bull or something to that effect.

NV4Life, why should your brother "donate" a 380 gross set to you so that you could just destroy them. They might be a little more important to him since he spent the hours out looking for them. Why don't you ask NVGuide if he would be willing to donate the brow times off of the sheds of the bull they called Buster. They would be a pretty close match to the brows on your bull.

Your taxidermist should be able to make a mold out of the points missing from the shed set, and use the repro's to fix your set. And if he's good, you'll never know the difference. That's what I would do if I were you. Or at least your taxidermist could use the sheds as a reference to rebuild the points from scratch.

downsouth - I never said that I would ever ask my brother to "donate" his 380 gross set of sheds. All I said was that the brows were a pretty good match. I wouldn't want to cut up a cool set like the rock or any big set for that matter. My brother got mad at me when I cut up a little brownie 5 point for a cribbage board, and it wasn't even his antler to get butthurt over.

nmtaxi - I have talked a little bit to my taxidermist about making casts. Do you know about how much it would cost to cast two 20" browtines? I never got a chance to ask him what it would cost.

Cost all depends on the taxidermist. Casting materials are pretty expensive, and it would be time comsuming. I would think you are looking at least a couple of hundred dollars and up. I'd charge more than that if it came to me. Most experienced taxidermist should be able to pull off a repair like that with only you and him the wiser.
I saw that pictures of the mount. Very nice.
