We pulled out of that area after a bad winter a while back (96-97?) Has that area rebounded any? I had heard that cow counts were down but that the bull ratio was normal. Any one care to share their experiences in that unit lately?

Backstrap,

We hunted that area all the time as well and were thinking about going back in this year, but got a hold of a guy we are real close with and he stated that they did get 3 small bulls (3 x 3 and two spikes) this year but over the 14 days of hunting they only saw roughly between the three of them 27 head of elk. The area that he hunts is in a roadless area back in 7 miles on horse. This area is awesome for elk and always good for some big bulls. He did say that they ran into 9 wolves while hunting.

Needless to say we are hunting another unit in the state this year. What other unit have you been hunting?

The mgr where I have my oil changed hunts old # 10 and between the 6 of them they have filled every year for the last 6 years. Usually take nothing less than 4 x 4's until his dad (who had been sick all week) shot a spike last year. Has invited me but haven't gone to see it first hand. They have seen wolves the last two years also. Hope this helps.

According to Fish and Game elk populations are way, way down in the unit. From over 10,000 elk around ten years ago to not much over 2,000 elk last winter during surveys. You still hear of some guys having luck like huntm2 have, but then I also hear reports from people that pack in on horse back for over a week and don't see anything. I also know a guy who works for the forest service who spent most of all last summer packed in for different things and over the entire summer saw no elk, not one. Its a unit I would scrutinize over alot before I made a decision.
