My Dad and I are thinking about applying in this unit. We have horses and all that. Just want to know if it is a unit with good elk numbers. Thanks for any help!

I am very familiar with this area. Elk numbers are good, trophy quality has dropped over the years. The terrain is steep and rugged. The area generally has increased in hunting pressure over the past five years or so. Several outfitters run hunters up there.

Thanks for the help. I've been up to Elk Mountian before but never into the wilderness. We'll give it a try. If nothing else I'm sure we'll see some beautiful country!!

we got 2 nice bulls this year...access is on private road but we hunt in public land...1 6x6 and 6x5..3 hour apart! lots of pressures! but good population of elk are there...few deers but big!...turkey!!

Did you go thru the Iron gates area?....Dwayne

There are many ways to access the wilderness area. Iron gate is on the south western side of the unit. Many people access the wilderness thru here. You can go into the wilderness from all directions though. Many sheep hunters come in from the northwest thru the santa barbara.
