I drew a special permit to hunt elk this year and was able to get my first elk. The hunt was pretty hard. There was a lot of snow and the elk were hard to find. I scouted did alot of scouting fefore the season and never seen a elk. A lot of the areas that I scouted during the summer I could not get to during the hunt. There was to much snow and I didn't have a snowmibile to get back to some areas That I heard the elk were. I hunted 10 days defore I got some information were the elk were holding out. The elk were up in the hills above some private property that I could not pass through. So It was about a mile and a half climb/hike to get to the area the elk were in. Walking through 10 inches of snow is hard work. I found some elk the day before but they gave me the slip. So I went back the secound day a the whole herd was bedded down on the hill side. I could see about 40 cows and 6 or 7 bulls. most of the bulls were spikes and other small bulls. I watched them for about 30 minutes when I saw a 5X6 in the trees. I could not get any closer because of the snow and the open terrain. I ranged him at 330 yards. and one shot with my .300 Ultra mag he fell down the hill and it was over. After I shot him the rest of the herd ran off and as they went up the other hill there were four big bull that came out of the trees. My bull is not that big but he is my first elk and I am real happy with him. Elk hunting is a lot diffrent then deer hunting.

this is the area I was hunting

Here he is after we got him down. The guy that would not let me hunt did let us get the elk out through his place so it was not that hard.

Craig:

Nice job on the elk and a good story to boot! You had a pretty good year by my standards. I like your "don't give up" attitude.
Ten days of hard hunting would make some dudes hang it up. You kept it up, and wacked a nice one. Good Job my man!!!!!!!!!

Craig,

Congrats to you on your first Elk, the story even adds more to the whole picture. Was this Elk hunt also in Montana or somewhere else?
Nice pictures by the way too.

Brian
