My Mrs. has 9 points on elk for Colo.. She is mainly a mzzldr hunter. No way on 2, 201, 1 or 10 so we are looking into 61, 76 or 48. Anyone got any experience in any of those units actually hunting?? deer - elk whatever. Keep it private if ya prefer [email protected] thanks.

I'm familiar with 48. My bro has shot a few nice elk out of there with his muzz. If she can walk a good distance in timberline country she could probably do well.

WOW!! thanks guys, I never knew so many of ya had hunted in the '2nd tier' of draw elk units in Colo. We definately will look into each of them now. Thanks again.

That is enough to draw muzzle in 76 and 61. These 2 units I am very familiar with. I live in Montrose. I photograph in 76
every day from June to November. 61 I shed hunt in the spring
They are completely different units in topo, climate, cover,
and elevation. Contact me at rocket @frontier.net I have
videos from 76 for the last 13 years.

Rocketman, Which do you think is a better quality unit?61?76?I know both the units are totaly different in terrain. What caliber of bull is feasable in either unit?My wife has 8 points is the reason I am asking. You can email me if you would rather talk in private.
Thanks in advance,Elkhuntr

Elkhntr should we talk the wives into apping together and then we all can hunt and help each other out?? she would be in the non-res. pool and we have pack animals and fairly decent hunting experience/success over the years.....

PleaseDear, Sound like fun but she is uncertain what she is going to do.We should draw antelope tags so most of are time will be generated towards that.So I am sure elk we be on the back burner this year. Thanks for the offer. If she applies for 61 let me know because I am fairly close and could help you out.Let me know what you decide,Elkhuntr

If you guys do decide to hunt 61 check around Castro Reservoir and further to the west around Yellow Jacket Canyon. I have seen and heard of some nice bulls be taken in that area over the years. I hope to draw a rifle tag for elk in 61 in the next few years. Should be a good place to start looking. Good luck ! :)

unit 61 is much better for top end bulls. A 380 was taken this
year muzzle. The best bull I hace seen or heard of in unit 76
is 346. Unit 61 is MUCH easier to hunt because it is mostly
flat(for Colo). Unit 76 takes much more physical effort
because if the vertical and the elevation. Almost all hunting
is at 12000-13000 or more. The cover is much thicker in
61. 76 long range scoping is the norm. These are completely
different units.

We have a llama packstring that we have used for years so remote access is really not a problem. http://baretopllamas.tripod.com The main issue is getting her drawn before the axe falls (again)on the non-res. in '05. I might be able to draw a 76 mzzldr deer tag with my deer pts. and do a dual species hunt, which always kinda sucks because the person with the elk tag sees huge bucks and the person with the buck tag sees great bulls..... haha aint that true! She has taken a look-see at the 61 topo maps and is kinda leaning towards it but she really likes the 'scenery' of the 76 high country offerings......WOMEN!!

It looks like it could take 11-12 points for a non-resident to draw a muzzleloader tag for 61. I am going to try and draw it with 10 points this year for 1st rifle.
