Wyoming Unit 24 elk

I drew a unit 24 elk license inm wyoming for 2004. I have hunted antelope in the area in the last few years and saw a fair number of elk. I was wondering how hunters who hunted the area for elk in the past few years did. The hunt starts on Oct. 1 so I would think the elk would be in the middle of the rut which should make locating animals a little easier. There is a large ammount of public land in the unit so access shouldnt be a problem. Any info on past hunts would be greatly appreciated. thank you

RE: Wyoming Unit 24 elk

I hunted there 2 years ago. We went early to archery hunt and had a good time, very little presure, but the closer to Oct.1st it got the more traffic and the less bugling. I heard my last bugle the first day of rifle season. We camped at the camp grouds, but I wouldn't again because we hunted on up the mountain and the roads were bad in spots. As far as finding elk, they were pretty wide spread.

RE: Wyoming Unit 24 elk

thanks for the info. I was in the area last october 5 to the 10th on an antelope hunt and heard a few elk bugle. We spotted 2 nice bulls that were with the cows and several smaller bulls that were in the area as well. We didnt see very many antelope or elk hunters, during our hunt. The elk we spotted were in classic antelope country which was surprising. Did you see the majority of the elk during your hunt in the mountains? Also, how tough are the roads in the higher terrain? Thanks again for the info.

RE: Wyoming Unit 24 elk

isn't the area there having all the problems with the elk dropping dead

RE: Wyoming Unit 24 elk

No the area where the elk are dropping is southwest of Rawlins. Unit 24 is approx. 80 miles northwest from there. The die off is hopefully isolated to that area. I have not heard of any similar problems any where else in the state.

RE: Wyoming Unit 24 elk

The feed in the Green Mountain area (25) is poor quality. The elk there dont seem to have as much fat on them as in other more mountainous areas of the state. Scout for the best feed (least cattle grazing) and you'll be on elk. Its a fair to good area for access though, and it is pretty open country, so its not too difficult finding elk. Late in the season look for isolated patches of cover off the fringes of the larger timbered areas. Little pockets of timber on broad open hill sides will hold elk. There are a few 350 class bulls that come out of this country every year. Have fun.

RE: Wyoming Unit 24 elk

All the hunting we did was up above the campgrounds or higher. The roads were good every where as far as getting there, just rough and slow in spots. In my opinion there was alot of bulls there, but a 300 class bull would be top end. If you want to know where we saw elk and hunters you can email me at [email protected].

RE: Wyoming Unit 24 elk

hey bullnanza,
i have been hunting deer and elk in this area for about four years now. i just moved from rawlins to jackson about four months ago. i grew up camping, fishing, and scouting up on green mountain. in fact that is where i will be applying for a license as well. if you hunt hard, hold out, and put the time in i see no reason why you can't go home with a bull in the 340-360 range. two different occasions i have been with friends and watched one shoot a 335 bull with a rifle and the year before another friend shot a 363 bull with his bow. last year i watched a 6x6 that would go 365-370 easily. i watched him for two weeks. cottonwood campground is the place to camp and hunting to the south west from the campgrounds would be my advise.

Thanks to everyone for the info. Does anyone have a handle on rut timing in the area. Last year during the first week in October they were actively bugling. These elk were west of the Wamsutter, Jeffery City road. Is bugling in the first week of October productive from a hunters standpoint in the area? Hopefully it will be a wet spring with good grass growth which will make for better horn growth.

RE: Wyoming Unit 24 elk

bullnanza,
i am not much of a bowhunter, however, i have become a very effect bugler as i do have a passion of learning more and more about becoming the best communicator with the elk as possible. so two years ago my buddy and i were up there scouting for his elk and i was playing around with my power bugler and i had about four bulls all over 330 going absolutely crazy and this was the third week of september. i personally think that by the third week of october these elk have pretty much shut up. i drew a ferris mountain bull tag in 2000 and we hunted that third week and the bulls were still talking but by the end of the week they had shut off completly. ferris is just across highway 287 to the east of muddy gap or three forks. you would be surprised how much more vocal the elk on ferris and green are compared to other areas around rawlins. that whole mountain range from crookes mountain, green mountain, ferris mountain, seminoes, and the shirly basin is just excellent to hear these awesome animals during the rut.
