The DWR is proposing Adding an additional 300 LE elk tags for this 2004 season. The new lisences will be mostly archery and muzzleloader. It seems that all of the units are producing bulls above the age objective and they are finally going to do something about it. Plus, it means more money for them.I, for one, am pumped because I Might actually get to hunt elk in my own state. What do you guys think about the additional tags???

Why don't they wait till next year then they can get their hands on $795 per extra non-resident tag?

There is a big problem with only increasing the tags by 300. AR301 was done away with this year so those 300 tags should be added back in. That means the DWR hasn't raised the tag numbers at all. There is NO increase in Limited Entry Tag numbers this year. Jim Karpowitz told us last year that there would be significant increases of elk permits as 26 of the 29 units were over objective. That is what we need, a real increase. I will be at the meetings asking for more permits. These units just keep getting older and older. Lets hunt elk.

2-point

I hadn't even thought about that side of it. Looks like they are just trying to make it look like they are keeping promises. I can't believe the amount of money that tags will be next year. Just plain greedy.

Were did you hear this? Sounds like a rumor to me and I doubt that if they added 300 more tags that the majority would go to archery and muzeloaders. After all, rifle hunter get 65% of all LE tags.

BlackTimber- I think he means that the majority of the increases will go to the Primitive Weapon hunts. Rifle gets 60% of the tags and on many units there has never been a primitive hunt (for seperate tags). So Say for example that unit X had 40 any weapon tags last year, and the overall tags numbers for unit X are raised to 50 this year, then rifle hunters will now only see 30 permits, while bowhunters will get 12.5 permits and ML hunters get 7.5 permits. (I don't know how they deal with .5s or such). That means that the Primative Weapon hunts get the new increase plus some.

As to the price increase, well think about this scenario.
Unit Y had 50 any weapon resident tags in 2003. That means Unit Y had 5 NonRes tags.
Now in 2004 Unit Y has 50 resident tags total. 30 Rifle Resident tags and NonRes 3 tags. 12-13 Archery Res tags and 1 NonRes tag. 7-8 Res ML tags and 0 NonRes tags. Now unit Y only has 4 NonRes tags.
This means that there will be Less NonRes Tags in past years because the splits, Rifle/ML/Archery, now lower the NonRes percentage totals. This causes a decrease in revenue, thus the need for an increase in license cost.

Good Luck in the Draws.

Nice summary there 2_Point!

One additional observation. The number of NR Archery permits will be significantly higher than ever in the past. While this doesn't bring in more $$$, it does provide some enticement for NR's to apply out and away from the any weapon hunts.

After all this game is not so much about the $$$, but keeping all the different plates spinning up there without a big crash.

I'm sure that the permit numbers will be up significantly either this year or the year after. Jim and the rest of the folks are absolutely fed up with the complaining coming from those of us who's been eating "unsuccessful" letter soup for the last 15 years :)

Cheers,
Pete

Andyman, those numbers are exactly what was put forth last fall when the AR301 was replaced. There will be a total of exactly 4 more LE Elk permits in 2004 with those numbers.

The question is will there be an additional increase to manage to age classification properly or not? I eagerly await the results of the RAC's that just took place. I was unable to attend any of them.

If anyone else has any information from the RAC meetings that just took place, it would be greaty appreciated.

Cheers,
Pete
