What is your favorite Elk Call?

I am interested in hearing what elk calls you guys use and what is your favorite, or least favorite for that matter. I started out using a Sceery cow call, still have it but don't use it much, I now use the woodwise hyper hot cow call. I use the Powerbugle for my bugle call and love it for the simplicity of it. However I am looking into geting the Primos terminator bugle and the hyperlip cow. What about you guys?

I use Carlton's brown power triple reed for bot bull sounds and cow sounds. One does it all for me.

Beanman

Hoochie Mama! I've had good success that last 2 seasons, but I was only using it on rosies in the Quinault Valley.

It Depends on what the situation is. For instance If i am doing a locator call I perfer to use the Hyper lip (Single and Double)
If i have a bull coming in I use the sleezy call, or the hoochie mama. Then when I go to stop the bull I use a Carlton Mouth Call.
But two weeks ago I got the new Hot Lips call and I am really excited about using it this fall

What ever call they respond to. I have 7 different calls and switch from one to another depending on my response from the elk. Here is the theory...

1. Hunting camp down the road or the group who hunted the area just 7 days prior to you arriving and used brand X.
2. You come in and start using brand X. The Elk are educated with brand X. They do not answer your calls like they should.
3. I switch to brand Z and the elk are answering more... Not educated to your specific call.

It is my theory...

I have had good success with the Primos Houchi-Mama and the hyper lip calls, but agree 100% with "TheHunt" when it comes to being flexible and changing calls when the elk get quiet, or refuse to answer. Sometimes a small change like that can make all the difference. If everyone in the woods used the same calls, it would be tough to call in anything after they got wise to that call.

LAST EDITED ON Mar-23-04 AT 07:57AM (MST)[p] That would be to hear bulls bugle, I achieve this by a variation of different bugling sounds. It would no doubt be the bugle as my #-1 choice. Like others I too can make any elk sound with a mouth diaphram, cow or bull. I enjoy getting bulls both riled or curious with certain types of bugles. Many times I'll finish off a situation with cow calling, from aggressive to strain your ears to hear cow calls, what ever the situation calls for. From calling them in to call & stalk with 2.

My favorite mouth reeds are double reeded calls such as the Hot Coaxer and Rocky Mountain, my grunt tube is a telescopic one called the Rut Buster, it's got awesome sound. For cow calls other than my mouth diaphram I use a Hyper lip single or the Cow Call with the black rubber band, the lonesome cow call by carlton works well too. I like these for versatility, but more importantly if you're not good with a mouth diaghram sometimes you need to get those very low cow sounds, and many of the other cow calls on the market can't do it, so I look for ones that can. elknut1

Primos' HyperLip and Terminator are my favorite bugles. My favorite cow call is the Sceery HyperHot. I am almost embarrassed to say this but I tried a Hoochie Mama last fall and I'll be damned if that thing didn't call in the bulls. I felt silly using that ridiculous looking call in front of that hunter but the friggin' thing somehow works! The first time I ever used it I called a good bull in to 25 yards which the hunter harvested with his bow. I agree with the posts that say that the bulls catch on to certain calls. The Sceery Ace-1 is a prime example here in some areas of Arizona. You can tell that it's an Ace-1 from a mile away. They sound like a duck call when not used properly and serve as an effective alarm bark for scaring off older bulls.

Abe & Sons Bugles enabled me to take my calling to the "next level". I think they are easier for someone to master compared to diaphram calls. More importantly, they can produce some amazingly realistic sounds. In roughly 18 days of being in Elk country during the rut over the last two years I've talked to about 50 bulls with one. Mostly locating. But, also have gotten several big bulls really hot & pissed off with one. The bulls are very responsive to it.

anything by primos, some quaker boy diaphrams, herders old type whisles. all kinds of things. like said above whatever works.

FEAR NOT FOR I AM WITH YOU! Walk soft and carry a 300 RUM,

Primos palate plate diaphram did it for me last bowseason, stuck my 1st elk at 10 yards! I also use other primos and estrus whine from carlton

My first year actaully calling last year and I hat great success with primos calls. I called in my friends first bow elk kill with the hoochie mama combined with a little bit of theh yper lip single mixed in. The tone convertors work well with the hyper lips for up close calling. But I agree with what they said earlier, you have to call according to the situation!

LAST EDITED ON Mar-26-04 AT 11:03PM (MST)[p]I too go by whatever the Elk tell me they wanna hear, but by far Primos is my favorite brand. On my person or in my pack I carry the Terminator Bugle tube, without the blue reed thing, a Hoochie Mamma, Lead Cow and Calf, Hyper Lip Single, and at least one of each of these diaphragm's- Hyper plate, Ivory Plate, and Sentry Plate.

Now I may or may not use any or all of these, depending on the situation.

I have found that knowing when to be quiet is every bit as important as knowing when and how to call.

That said, my favorite is probably the Ivory Plate diaphragm call. With it I can make both Bull and Cow sounds. I always have one in a shirt pocket so I can slip it in at a moments notice. When an Elk is coming in you can make a little mew and stop him where you want him for an easy shot. After the shot I have "Screamed" on it and stopped about 75% of the Elk I have shot, both bulls and cows. Now they may not stay there till they fall over, but if I can hold them for a couple seconds that means a lot when tracking one.

I would buy as many as you can right now and practice with them throughout the Summer. You will know which ones you are proficient with and only use those. I have also found that if you hear a "perfect" bugle, 9 times out of 10 it is another hunter. Get a good video about calling Elk and watch it over and over!

I forgot to add that I have killed two Bulls after I missed the first shot by quickly stopping them with a diaphragm call, and keeping them there long enough to get another shot off.
