Its my second time putting in for elk in nevada and I just dont know what areas are the best to put in for. Any advice would be much appreciated...

I'm a resident and have been applying in Nevada for the past 8 years for elk and still not sucessful in the draw. I don't believe there is a bad area in Nevada to apply for. Every area has huge bulls. Probally the best area will be 161-164 early because of the dates will fall in line with a part of the rut. But, for a non-resident, I believe there is only one tag alloted. Area 231 is directly connected with Utah's Southwest Desert elk area, and they do take large bulls from both areas. The most applied for is 111-115 where the most tags are. Tags are hard to get but well worth it. Allot of these areas you can go unguided and get a nice bull. Others, you'll have to spend time searching for the elk. Best of luck and if you need any more info e-mail me. Mickeyelk
most areas hold big bulls. I took a 362" from 231 couple of years ago. That area is a little harder to hunt then most, lots of pinyon and juniper. The Ely area 111-114 has the most tags..hence most hunters, good bulls, but have heard some horror stories about having to deal with other hunters, ie guides. I actually quit putting that area as a choice, i don't like fighting for places to hunt with other people, kind of like it to myself. Took me 12 years to draw my tag, but it was worth the wait. Good luck, but i think you will be waiting for a few more years.

By viewing the draw odds stats via the Nv. website, it seems every year someone in the lower point pool numbers draws a tag in one or two of the units offered. Depending on your weapon of choice and considering which weapon you feel most confident in, I like to go for the weapon of choice and then put those or that unit as my 1st, 2nd, ect, choice. Ya gotta apply to draw so keep the faith..... it could be you this year saying 'I can't believe I drew' with only X amount of points!! Good luck!

Pssst! the best kept secret is the new unit 121 if you hit on that one good chance of a 400+ hog!... would be like hitting the lottery for sure...odds on favorite is 111-221,223...Good Luck!
