You only go thru life once- so get it right!!

looking for information on the Elk in this Unit
Is anyone hunting this Unit or has hunted it?
I am going west for Elk in Colorado and the group I am going with mentioned this Unit-
any information on the terrain and density of Elk-
is this a good unit to hunt?

any information I get will be appreciated

I guess that my take on this situation is that I would definately look for the elk that night until I either found it or jumped it. If I jump it, I would then back off till morning.

I would be very concerned about a non gutted elk being out all night. As a veterinarian, I can tell you that after only 4-6 hours, the bacteria start leaving the gut and spreading into the meat, regardless how cold the temp (air and ground) is.

I am glad some of you were able to recover some meat that hadn't spoiled overnight. I think the conditions have to be just right for it to work.

Re your question on Colorado unit 11.
I have Hunted this unit for both Deer and Elk for the past 15 years with mixed results.

The Elk move through this area when the weather turns bad and the Snow flies, if no weather no Elk.

My Hunts have been on public land and again I emphasize the importance of Weather other wise it is a waste of time for Elk.

The Elk move out of the Black Mountain area out of Craig Colorado when it snows heavily.

Hope this helps

Good Luck

thanks for the reply

so they travel around 40 miles into unit 11 around Maybelle
so that would be the NE corner of Unit 11
thanks again for the information :)

Tex-

Just wondering...how exactly do bacteria start "leaving the gut?" Isn't the gut sealed except for the esophagus and the ass end?

I hunted out of maybell for 7 years in the 4th season. if there is no snow the elk will not be there. But you will see ALOT of hunters on the roads looking. this is mostly flat rolling land with sage brush and cedar trees. this is where some of the elk spend the winter. there is a nice camp ground with hot showers, small store and a cafe in the town of maybell this is a hit or miss for this spot i stopped hunting this unit 4 years ago. Good Luck

I understand that the tags cover more then one unit
just trying to gather info. on area before we get there

thanks for any information.

I can some of you guys have not done your homework on unit 11. There are elk that reside on the public land year round. You have to know where to look. I have taken 2 elk there, one with a muzzel loader and one during the second rifle season. Note: there was no snow during either season. Check the DOW stats, elk are shot there in every season.
