I was just out through the Duchesne & Roosevelt area and I realized I wouldn't have a clue how to hunt deer in that rolling carpet of PJ and Cedars. I'm used to hunting alpine basins with clearcuts and meadows. That crap looks like a solid wall of trees ! What do you do, crawl around and all fours looking for legs ? I got claustraphobic just looking at it. Do you even carry binoculars to hunt ? It must take some serious skills to be consistently successful out there.
Oh, and congrats to whomever banged the huge 6x7 bull that I followed from Strawberry to Heber City. That was a huge bull.

I used to hate hunting in junipers but I kind of like them now. If you have the wind right you can get very close to animals sometimes.
I find the best way to hunt junipers/pj is to get above them and look down into them or if the junipers are on a hillside to look into them from the opposite hillside. If the junipers are in flat country the best way hunt them is to find out what trails the animals use and hope to get lucky. Hunting in thick junipers is similar to hunting in thick pines you normally can't see far infront of you and it is common to here an animal run away from you that you never see.

If you cannot get high and glass then you can walk the area till you find big fresh tracks.
Usually it is real easy to track a buck in Pinion Juniper country as long as you watch the wind. Take it real slow and yes you have to glass under the Pinions and spot them first or else your just burning calories.
Many would be surprised how tight the bucks in this type of country hold before taking off.
Best of luck,
Jerry

The best way I've found to hunt it is by placing a treestand or grounblind off of a well used trail.

I have to hunt blacktails in some real brushy spots, and I hate it!
I love to hunt where I can glass and the bucks don't know I am there.
I also hunt some tight stuff for Muleys in Oregon, there we do well by doing deer drives with about four or five people, and putting someone up where they can see down into the brush. That can be a pretty exciting way to hunt, with all the action coming at once! Kinda like pheasant hunting!

HAHA! Just like you BlueOak! Haha LMAO! I've hunted thickets before (Pine) and the best way I found was find a real good thicket, and walk 10 feet watch and listen for a minute. Walk another 10 feet...etc. Or if hunting in pairs, have on person walk 10 feet. wait a couple seconds, then let the other person catch up. Then the first person walks 10 feet...etc That way, one person is always watching. Also try to be very quite! Just my .02
