Fifty Years of Teaching Math 1957 - 2007

Last week I purchased a burger at Burger King for $1.58. The counter girl took my $2 and I was digging for my change when I pulled 8 ce nts from my pocket and gave it to her. She stood there, holding the nickel and 3 pennies, while looking at the screen on her register. I sensed her discomfort and tried to tell her to just give me two quarters, but she hailed the manager for help. While he tried to explain the transaction to her, she stood there and cried. Why do I tell you this?

Because of the evolution in teaching math since the 1950s:

1. Teaching Math In 1950s

A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is 4/5 of the price. What is his profit ?

2. Teaching Math In 1960s

A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100 His cost of production is 4/5 of the price, or $80. What is his profit?

3. Teaching Math In 1970s

A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is $80. Did he make a profit?

4. Teaching Math In 1980s

A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is $80 and his profit is $20. Your assignment: Underline the number 20.

5. Teaching Math In 1990s

A logger cuts down a beautiful forest because he is selfish and inconsiderate and cares nothing for the habitat of animals or the preservation of our woodlands. He does this so he can make a profit of $20. What do you think of this way of making a living? Topic for class participation after answering the question: How did the birds and squirrels feel as the logger cut down their homes? (There are no wrong answers, and if you feel like crying, it's ok.)

6. Teaching Math In 2007

Un hachero vende una carretada de maderapara $100. El costo de la producciones es $80. Cuanto dinero ha hecho

"Roadless areas, in general, represent some of the best fish and wildlife habitat on public lands. The bad news is that there is nothing positive about a road where fish and wildlife habitat are concerned -- absolutely nothing." (B&C Professor, Jack Ward Thomas, Fair Chase, Fall 2005, p.10).

Tfinal;

My wife is a bookkeeper at a hardware store, she will agree 100% with you on that statement. I have two family members who started in the teaching field in the past 4 years and they are very disappointed in the school system here in CA.
They are beginning to feel that the school system bureaucracy really do not care that much about the kids and their education, just if they are going to get enought money to redo their office. Both of my daughter-in-laws work hard with their kids to upgrade their level of education at home due to the poor standard they receive in the class room.

Gee whiz, I sure as hell would not want to go to school these days. I have tried to explain to the younger boys across the street and my friends two boys about 20 years ago how to do math, they had no idea what I was telling them. It has been screwed up for at least that long.
I had A's & B's all through school in Math.

Go to a store these days and buy something and let's say the total comes to $10.60 and you give them a $20. BUT you also give them 60 cents so that you can get just a $10 bill back. Wait till you see their face when they don't know what to do since they had already entered into the register a $20 and the change is suppose to be $9.40.........DUMB LOOK.

And if we get another war monger dumb dumb in the white house we will might hear this in 10 more years:

7. Huang chi logger chi American militaristy cho vi ang vo. Chi vo American Dollar vo hung sum cho chuong. Cho vi? ehhhh' American Imperialist?

(P.S. I'm learning Mandarin just in case.)

school is what you make of it, my oldest gets straight A's and yes she can count change, but we as parents make sure both of our daughters do well ,,,,, way to many people now days view school as a babysitter,,,,,

Do you guys realize at fast food restaurants and retail stores you're not getting the brightest kids that learned math. You can take a shetland pony but your not going to teach him to run as fast as secreterait. My son graduated in a little class of 15 students but somehow managed to learn enough math to get a degree in geophysics. ( Probably doesn't count since it was U. of California.) Democrats or Republicans education policy shifts like the wind in Nebraska never changes much at the local level except the amount of paperwork.

I got a couple of questions Tfinal:

Where can you get a burger for $1.58?

Clould the logger buy a $1.58 burger today with $20.00 in 1950's money?

Did the manager figure out how to count the change?

Dude, i got no idea, i just thought is was an amusing joke, especially if youre from the southern left-coast. . .

I remember in 1960 in my home town we could go to the local burger place at lunch time and get a Hamburger, French Fries and a Coke for $0.50.....YES 50 cents and best damn fries around the area.

I'd struggle in class nowadays with all the "t-back" and "whale tail" distractions.

Yea and I remember when a thong was a sandal, today, if you say thong or even mention the word in a crowded room youre pervert. . . I did that once at a wedding reception, I said, "nice thongs" and boy did I get the look, espcially because I was photographing the event. Today, I hear the word thong I think of a sandal not a tback or whaletail. . .

Obviously what we need is a big tax increase for education. No matter who the next president is, I'm confident we'll get it too.:)
