Fellow hunters. I am going on my first white tail hunt. I have hunted black tail and mule deer over the years and have taken my share. I will be hunting in a wooded area around 4000ft. {B.C. Canada} Mountians with some meadows. There is a river at the foot of the mountians. I have heard white tail can be invisible and hide anywhere. Any tips?? Thank You and good hunting BCKID

I got a whitey doe hunt oct 17th, we are crawling with them out here. And let me tell yah, muleys are soooooo much harder to hunt, a whitetail; will do the same thing, have the same pattern every day, theyy are so predictable, whereas a muley buck will change constantly.

Later Yall!!!!

I'd try to locate some natural funnels between the meadows(feeding areas) and the thick bedd'in areas. Maybe some rub-lines, if they're rubb'in. I don't agree with Mr. Whitetail being so easy to pattern. At least our Eastern Whitetails sure aren't. The young bucks aren't the brightest, but a good buck with some years on him is as tuff to hunt as any deer!!! Good luck on your hunt! I hope you get one of those monster non-typicals with all that mass and "trash"!!!! ;-)

Buckrub is right. Find a good natural funnel. Mr. Whitetail is easy to pattern but once your cover is blown good luck ever seeing him again. Keep scent and noise to a minimum. Whitetails are wayyyyy more spooky than any mule deer have ever hunted. AS long as you can find good trail and keep your scent from contaminating the area you should do good given many deer are in your area. Try using a treestand also.

You guys are right on. Whitetails (at least the ones out west) are very easy to pattern, if you are willing to be patient. Set up on a saddle, rub line. well used trail intersection or scrape. Set up in a treestand as far away from your target area as you feel comfortable (where you can still see well and can get a good clean shot). I have noticed over the years that the bigger bucks usually start moving around within the last hour or so of daylight. If they have not been pressured a lot it will be earlier. If they have been hunted hard, they probably wont come out until well after dark. As was said before, once you spook one, unless he is hard into the rut, he is gone for the rest of the season. They are much easier to hunt than mulies or blackies but they are definately the most spooky. I have taken 4 P&Y whitetails here in WA, all from tree stands. I like to hunt on the ground most of the day, looking for new sign in a new area, but sit in my tree stand for the last 2-3 hours of daylight. Do not leave your stand until at least a 1/2 hour after dark, an BE QUIET!!!! I cant stand to sit in that damn thing all day! I dont know how those dudes back east can do it.
I know that whitetail is a dirty word around here, but they can be an ace in the hole if the rest of your season has been crappy. Plus they taste better than those sage fed mulies, there just not as cool looking.
Get a monster!

maddog here.yea. right at dark. that is when you will SEE them. but they are born skittish and arent stupid.you wont get a standing broad side shot like a muley either. when you spook one you will understand the term 'whitetail'. tree stand is the best,it puts you above the zone. now as to when to set up? well..if they are going from A.bed to B feeding area then say late afternoon.BUT......some times they will go to a 'intermediete' area, between the bed and the feeding area.so you set up your stand,he's already got you pegged. you will like the change from muleys! any way good luck...

Real early, and real late. That's the only thing I don't like about whitetail hunting, typically anyway!!! You only get about 10 minutes first light, and last that's usually good... Unless they are rutting pretty hard.

i have hunted whitetail deer for 35 years i have never personally hunted muledeer i have been reading this site for 3 years other than the fact that most mule deer migrate, during most of the year these deer stay in a general area if you glass a mule deer in the evening and you go to the same spot the next morning and he shows up and bang as i read many times on this site is this not the same thing as your so called patterning a whitetail all deer have general traits in there core areas and besides that my heart starts pumping overtime weather its the fist time i see a buck coming down a trail or the third if they end results are the same thank god for deer (ALL DEER)
