Manti info

Expecting only to get a bonus point, I've drawn one of the non resident tags for the Central Mtn-Manti any weapon hunt. WAHOO!!!!!
I have never hunted Utah before and would like to do this hunt on my own, unguided. I'm from Michigan, so I won't be able to scout except for a week or so before the season opens. Is this a reasonable plan and what should I expect.
Any and all information and/or advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Ken M.

congradutations on the tag. I live in Washington and If I ever draw one of the Utah elk tags I'm going to be on the phone with a guide.

You might never draw one of these tags again. good luck and kill a big one.

Ken,
Your goal of a self-guided hunt on the Manti is very obtainable.
There are several guys on MM who know the area well. If you talk to the UDWR biologists that cover the area they can point you in the right general direction, and if you spend a week scouting the area you should have no problem finding a nice bull. You may want to hold out for a monster as there are getting to be a ton of BIG bulls in that unit.
Good Luck!!

Get a topo map amd loook ahe electric lake area... you should beable to find some nice bulls!

My family has a cabin in the Manti unit so I spend a fair amount of time in the area each summer. Last year the antler growth was really good and I saw some very good bulls (370+). You're welcome to contact me later in the summer and I'll tell you if I've seen any good bulls. If you'd like some company for a day or two on your hunt I'd be happy to go with you.

Congrats on your tag. I actually drew the same tag this year. I know the area fair to middlin and will be looking for some help as well, but if you need a contact person here in Utah, I'd be more than happy to help. Heck, if needs be you can join us in camp. If I get some good info, I'll try to help point you in the right direction.

Congrats on the tag. I think that your goal of doing the hunt self-guided is very obtainable. The biggest problem you will have on the hunt will be passing the 300 class bulls and waiting for the 340s+. There are many accessible areas and the bulls will be screaming for 3-4 hours every morning, so unless you are deaf you will be able to find the elk. (No offense meant to our hard-of-hearing members). While there are bulls killed in the 370+ class, most good bulls will be 330-350 with lots of 280-320 types. I would rather have a 340 bull on the wall that I shot rather than have a 370 bull that I paid someone to "guide" me to. (just my opinion and not a judgement on others) There will be plenty of info that can be shared, but wait until a little later in the summer. And do call the local Bioligist, last year they told a guy from California about a spot and that guy shot a 400+ bull.... self-guided. Good Luck to you.

that is 1 hell of a good area. i go down there on the spike hunt and them damn big bulls are everywere, you will just have to walk a bit, there are enough roads down there that getting 1 out would not be a problem! as far as tasking the dwr ara biologist i say screw them them guys are nothing but jerks down there they tell you I DONT KNOW I DONT KNOW!!! lying sunsabitches! sorry i just get a little pissed at the dwr sometimes! them !@#$&^$^%*&*(

How big a bull u want? Most of the hunters from Michigan wet when they see a real big bull. Are all the hunters from Michigan like that? Congrads on the tag. U will have a great hunt. i have a cabin down there. I can set u up if u like. I have hunted the manti for elk 30 years. I cant seem to draw however i have taken some buddies hunting down there all bulls were 330 plus 1 went 387. I have seen a couple last year that never got shot that were pushing the 380 mark. E-mail me if u like.

Good call 2-Point!
I totally agree with you, I get a kick out of these guys who think they are big time hunters because they went on a high dollar guided hunt and killed something. Don't get me wrong, I am envious of anyone who can incorporate hunting with making a living--that's great. But on the flip-side, at the SFW, Turkey, Elk, Mule deer, and all the other banquets that auction off tags it kind of pisses me off to see all the guides talking on their cell phones during the auction to their hunters taking all the tags and pretty much pricing actual hunters completely out of the picture, these tags in my opinion should go to the people who paid their hard earned money to attend these banquets. Here's an idea--HUNTERS must be present to bid. HHHMMmmm, to bad money talks and bs walks--and I do realize these banquets are to raise money for wildlife......Maybe I'm just pissed I didn't draw anything this year!

kmur,
My dad drew out on that tag last year and got a nice bull with nice mass. If you want anything else just email me at littleman1_11 @hotmail.com <-- there isn't a space though. There are several good areas but you just have to know how big of one you want. Shoot me an email and i will let you know what you need to know.

And by the way i would be happy to help you before and througout your hunt. I loved it last year and i could show you some awesome bulls. And i wont charge anything, it is just fun to be out there and to see those big guys. Last year we saw what would have been the state record bull but it was the weekend after my dad shot his. And im not kidding either, he was so big he couldn't run all he could do was plod along and he couldn't even go through the trees.
Well let me know if you would like me to help you before or during the hunt. And if anyone else drew the tag and might want some help send me an email i would be glad to help.

Thanks for understanding us deaf folks. I've never heard an elk bugle in the wild, but this year maybe my new hearing aids will do the trick. Now I gotta learn how to bugle! John

Are you sure it was a state record elk. It may have just been a constipated rag horn, thus the reason he could not run.

Yeah it would have been the state record. You could count everypoint with your naked eye from clear across canyon.
