What are your top 3 Hardcore Bowhunters in the industry?

These are names that come to mind...

Chuck Adams
Randy Ulmer
Cameron Hanes

What name come to your mind?

Midnight

I would say:

#1 Randy Ulmer the dude just keeps killing huge Muley's. Wish he would film his hunts.

#2 I like FMP they are hardcore backcountry, but seemed to have moved away from that a bit lately.

#3 Cameron Hanes but really doesn't seem like he has killed some huge animals lately you know.

does Randy Ulmer have any books out? Or can you recomend any books to better your bow hunting skill? ( im reading back country bow hunting by Cameron Hanes) Kinda of the subject, but here is the answer to your question.

1 Randy Ulmer, The deer he has killed with a bow are something else!

2 cameron Hanes, a fitness machine

3 David W long, from Eastmans hunting journal.

#1 Fred Bear
#2 Anothy Dixon
#3 Dwight Schue
#4 Chuck Adams
#5 Cam Hanes
#6 Guy Eastman

Tiffany Lakosky
T-bone
The Drurys
David Blanton
Jackie Bushman

All super hardcore hunters.... At least thats what the voices in my head tell me..... Or is that the TV.... Its all a blur..

Hardcore doesn't mean huge bucks in my book. To me it would be someone I may struggle to keep up with.

Nate Simmons
David Long
Cam Hanes

I know you said 3 but Bohntr gets honorable mention.

This a really tough one guys.. I have had the pleasure to meet a few of them and these would have to be my top guys.

1. David Long- I've had the pleasure to bump into David a couple times now on the trail packing for our deer hunts and also helped back him in on horses once for a summer scouting trip. Yes he's strictly a mule deer guy, but the man knows his stuff, works hard and year after year pulls toad bucks out that i cant figure out how to kill.

2. Cameron Hanes- The man that basically started the image of the absolute 'die hard' bowhunting athlete as you could call it. Although he doesn't kill the biggest and baddest animals on the mountain the guy is straight up relentless and Eats, Sleeps, and Lives for Bowhunting.

3. Randy Ulmer- Most people's number 1 and rightfully so. The guy kills some absolutely monsters no matter what it is. No explanation really needed her.

4. Chuck Adams- I tried the whole stalking camp and shooting fingers.. didn't work out for me. But Chuck is one of bowhunting's best of all time. He's getting up there in age now days but doesnt seem he's slowing down.

5. Nate Simmons- Nate is truly one of the most genuine guys I've meant in the woods. I've had a few chances to talk to him while he was filming for David. He hunts hard, knows his stuff and the proof's in the pudding.

6. Kiviok Hight- Most guys probably haven't heard of this guy but he had an article in Eastman's a while back on a Colorado Mtn Goat. Guy is an Elk slaying machine and diehard back country bowhunter.

Randy Ulmer
Cameron Hanes
Chuck Adams

And as someone else mentioned BOHNTR gets the honorable mention!

Roy, if you ever put together a book of your most memorable hunts and the details of how you made the stalk and kill from beginning to end I would buy it in a heartbeat! IMO we could learn just as much from you as we could any of these guy?s when it comes to mule deer hunting. You?re a real pro! Thanks for sharing the animals you take.

2. Karyn F. Moss
3. Byron Latturner
4. Kirt Darner
5. Anthony Dickson..Best dam face paint on the front.
6. Mike Brownlee

.. Dwight Shue
.. Cameron"bvd" Hanes
.. Rusty Ulmer
.. Rand Ulmer
.. Larry D. Jones
.. CAL COZIAH

There have been many well deserving archers mentioned. IMO
Top 3 Others than the GodFathers Pope and Young would be
Fred Bear
Chuck Adams
Dwight Schuh

Honorable mention would include Cameron Hanes, Dan Evans, Randy Ulmer, Greg Krogh, Cal Coziah, Zack Shettler, Nate Simmons, Shawn Monsen, Lisa and Wayne Endicott, Bob Fromme. Freddy Eichler!

>It's the sweet FMP visor and
>mass amounts of face paint
>that gives him the advantage.
>

Dont forget those shiny Oakleys on his head. Those are the kinds of guys that drive me away from a product. Hoyt visor on backwards, sunglasses and dont forget the Badlands pack. Hoyt and BL make a great product I just dont care to be in the same boat as Anthony.

I was wondering when someone was going to mention Schaffer. Read an article someone did on him after he passed away, truly remarkable bowhunter. Cam may have him beat in the endurance running department, but Paul would have mopped the floor with Cam in the strength department. Paul and one of his hunting buddies hunted out of an old VW beetle. One day they came back to the car and low and behold they have a flat, upon further inspection they had no jack. Paul's solution to the problem was simple, he told the other guy, " I'll lift you change.", and he held the car the entire time while the other guy changed out the flat. Another story in this article he shot one of his mountain species (don't remember if it was a rocky Mt goat or one of his grand slam sheep) but the animal was going to take a head dive off a cliff, Paul scrambled over to the dying animal, grabbed a hind leg, and drug himself and the animal back up to safer ground. He shot a video camera lens out at a hundred yards (camera rolling, and this is back when video cameras were over a grand) on a hundred dollar bet. I could keep going on with the stories about this guy, but I will stop for now.

No one has mentioned him yet so I will-Chris Brackett. He was the host of Arrow Affliction. He's a crazy good shot and fun to watch.

Another great story about Paul Shaffer was not a bowhunting story but a football story. As a running back for one of the MT universities, [Bobcats I believe] In the rivalry game he carried the ball 50 times for something like 250 yds, the amazing thing was the fact that he broke a bone in his leg early in the game. There was the time too that he picked up one of the Wensel twins by the boots turned him upside down and shook all the change out of his pants pockets. On top of all that the man made some of the nicest recurve bows money could buy! I was lucky enough to meet Paul and he was the most humble unassuming celebrity you could ever find. A shame we lost him in his prime.
DIKNDIRT

I think you got to give top hunter to Fred Eichler. I don't know why he is not at the top of more lists. He completed the super slam with a recurve, and he just keeps going.
Chuck adams next. and then it is a toss up of David long, and Nate simmons.

I read in that article that Paul's recurve draw weight was close to 100 pounds and he was so fanatical about his arrow being level he would draw the bow back with an arrow, anchor, and then move the bow away from his face til he was looking at it perpendicular away from his body arms outstretched, checking to see if his arrow was level. I think he could have went polar bear hunting with a willow switch and killed a bear.
WVBOWAK

Dwight Schuh has to be in my top three - the dude fashioned a bow to shoot with his mouth and killed a moose and muskox with it when he had to have shoulder surgery. Plus his book on spot and stalk muley hunting is classic and textbook.

Others I respect - David Long, Nate Simmons, Roy Grace. I guess I really like the guys willing to go steep and deep!

I admit I have a man crush on Tim Wells, host of Relentless Pursuit.
That guy is an amazing shot. Compound bow, no sights and shoots fingers.

Randy Ulmer
Chuck Adams
Fred Eichler

Just to name a few.

Mathews Z7

A lot of good hardcore hunters have been mentioned, but I would also have to add Kip Fowler. He always seems to be going one step further than most of us.

How about South Cox, He is as hardcore as all the others mentioned.

YOUR FAT!! DON'T TRY AND SUGAR COAT IT OR YOU WILL EAT THAT TOO!!

There are many Great Ones mentioned, but for me my number one has to be my Dad!

If it wasn't for all the memories past and present of him in face paint, mountain man beard, camo of the time and either his recurve or his compound and his instilling the love of the outdoors and how to get close to game; I wouldn't be such a FANATIC about bowhunting now! The animals he took were just a bonus to all of those memories, but being able to have him share those same memories of me now, takes the cake!

2nd - Fred Eichler, because his excitement about the "hunt" is his trophy no matter the size of the animal and that is what "hunting" should be about!

3rd - David Long, because he went from being an awesom rifle hunter to an Incredible Bowhunter with his dedication and willingness to do what others give up or too soon on.

>>- ERock-> ?

I know those guys are all good, but some times I like to think a little closer to home and about people I know. I would give Jeremy Houston a vote on here. That guy is super dedicated to the sport.

But my favorite TV hunter is

Michael Waddell

Ever heard of A local guy named Rick Valdez? He has killed over 1000 animals with bow and arrow. If he gets his range finder out you better have the camera rolling because something is going to die.

2. Fred Eichler
3. Cameron Hanes

David Long has published an awsome book called "Public land hunting" Its a great book. I learned a lot.

#1 Fred Bear

There are many other great bowhunters but he stands out alone in my opinion.
I think Roy here on MM is definitely overlooked by many but should not be.
Heck Roy has killed way more critters with a bow than David Long. Yes David Long is an awesome hunter but most of his animals are from a rifle. He only recently started whacking bucks with a bow.
It's amazing it seems if they are not on TV then they do not count. Bet there are some many of us do not even know about and thats probably how they prefer to keep it.

>Antiny Dixon???? Wtf

Some of these kids are drinking some strange koolaid. A good bowhunter gets close to animals.

There are alot of hard core guys out there. Some are better known then others because they have been on TV or what not. That doesnt mean that they are more hard core then the quiet guys that arnt as famous.

There are some guys on this sight that are pretty hard core. Lets name some of this not so famous guys that are on this site.

I would have to say Kip Fowler is one hard core hunter.

There are others, who are they?

Hey zrider2 - what's the deal with you hating on Anthony Dixon so much every time a guy posts him to his top 3-5? Sure, I had heard the hype and even met him a couple of times and he seemed a bit arrogant, but last year at the Bowcast he was our smoker round judge and I saw a different side of him. Over those 10 targets and couple of hours my perspective of him changed. The guy flat out LOVES archery hunting and more than that he was so fired up to help me and my buddy shoot better with some really effective tips, given with pure stoke for making our experience better. Something he said that day stayed with me and during both hunts for the 2 elk I killed last year those words of advice kept repeating in my mind, one of the hunts during a 1.5 hour stalk. (10 yards and 38 yards in case you're starting to wonder if I was launching from 80+)

Ease up on the hot sauce and take it down a notch. Each guy has a style and hunting passion that resonates with him and he associates his top 3-5 hunters to that tune. Just cause it's not your tune doesn't mean the melody isn't worthy.

1. Fred Eichler - nobody gets fired up like this guy when he takes a doe or a P&Y bear. Plus he's a genuinely nice guy.
2. Cameron Hanes
3. Fred Bear

In strictly bow hunting i would say the following

1- Fred Eichler (go spend one day with him in the woods and you will see he is for real)

2- Tom Hoffman (watch some of his videos & spend sometime talking to him & you will see he is a bow hunting god)

3- Nate Simmons (if you look at a lot of hunting videos for eastmans he was the camera man for Cam, Guy & David & he has killed some good animals himself)

Wow it's hard to say All these guys are studs when it comes to bowhunting. I read Chuck Adams book life at full draw. Hes defintly in top 3 , probably #1 All the guys mentioned could make up top 3 I guess my faverite to watch is Primos. I also like there calls.

How about Isaac Aleman aka "Batman" he is one bad azz mo fo!

Have you seen the animals that he kills!! holy crap, that dude is sick! Nobody, I mean nobody is ever going to be more hardcore then that dude. When the signal light is out, you know Isaac aka "Batman" is on the loose and blood will be spilled that day!

Not even the joker can stop him!!!

YOU'RE FAT!! DON'T TRY AND SUGAR COAT IT OR YOU WILL EAT THAT TOO!!

Top 3 industry guys would be Chuck Adams, Randy Ulmer and Cam Hanes.
I put our own Roy Grace right up there with any of them though. And I would be the 2nd person in line to buy any book or video you produce Roy.

Fred Bear and Chuck Adams are bowhunting legends, but Paul Shafer's bowhunting stories are some of the most interesting I've ever heard/read.

Grabbing the dying Dall as it went off the cliff is definitely one of those stories.

1. Tim Wells...why, because of this....

2. Nate Simmons
3. David Long

I like these guys because they love what they do and they do it in the same kind of country that I like to hunt. Also, because they are a huge part of the Eastmans organization without being born into the family.

"That's a special feeling, Lloyd"

1. Marvin Zeiser

2. Roy Grace

3. Jake Ensign (Archery Slam completed in less than one year!)

I don't know if these guys are the most hardcore but they are my personal favorites. All great guys that give a whole bunch back to the bowhunting community.

1.Tred Barta
2.Brandon Reynolds for his archery elk hunt go to monster muleys video clips and its 7x7 archery bull.
3.Chuck Adams

hate to sound to modest here but clearly the top 3 are

1) ME
2) Chuck Adams
3) Fred Bear.

Randy Ulmer

In terms of top end animals killed, more especially monster muleys and freakishly big bulls, Ulmer runs away with the prize. It's one thing to kill a respectable animal but we all know how rare and how hard it is to kill the monsters. Ulmer does it year in and year out. Course he has the resources, time, and money to do it, but you still have to slip one through the vitals and he seems to have that part down to a science.

Cameron Hanes deserves a look. He don't kill the biggest animals but there aint a guy out their with a more die hard work ethic. He does a lot of public land DIY hunts on a minimal budget. If he had the resources, time, and money Ulmer had, I think he'd be killing the big ones.

I dont know about the other 2 but that Tim Wells is a STRAIGHT UP KILLER!!!! And an absolute hoot while he's doing it. Love his show Relentless Pursuit, and I dont even bowhunt, well unless you count alligators.

I these guys should be mentioned.
--Paul Schafer and Bart Shleyer--
I think they more than qualify.

Paul was listed up around 20-30, several good stories about him.
WVBOWAK

How about this father and son for top two hardcore bowhunters. These guys do alright year after year, regular working guys hunting public ground on weekends. Hey! it looks like it's gonna work, you have no idea how long it took to go from powerpoint to jpeg when the guy running the computer is seriously technology challenged.

Randy Ulmer
Cameron Hanes

Matt Liljenquist

Im surprised more people didnt mention him? He's not a big, sponsored, TV show kind of guy but he is hands down the most successful archery hunter Ive ever met. He's got State Record Bighorns, The Grand Slam, coues, eastern whitetails, antelope, B&C Mule Deer, Bears all DIY public land and all SPOT and STALK.

He uses HECS animal cloaking systems its not even like he's hunting really its not even fair to the animals he hunts.. Otherwise I would include Matt.

z79outlaw--

Are you serious? HECS?

Right, so scent block sprays and clothing, decoys and camo also DQs any other hunter too.

Dumbest thing Ive ever heard in my life.

"You skin grizz?"

After having the opportunity this season to elk hunt with Matt Liljenquist I would have to add him to my top 3 list. He is a class act and has accomplished some awesome achievements with a bow. I also had the pleasure of meeting Rusty and Randy Ulmer. They are both down to earth great people.

I'm sorry I assumed you were as well versed in sarcasim as the rest of the world. My sincere apologies sir.

Cameron Hanes
Guy Eastman
Nate Simmons
These guys get it done and kill some spectacular animals.

>
>i can't believe no one has
>mentioned Ted nugent

This is for "Hardcore Bowhunters". Ted would be on the list for "casual livestock shooters" just below Jimmy Houston.

There are many archers who desrved to be mentioned but my personal opinion would be:

#1. Paul Shafer
#2. Fred Bear
#3. Chuck Adams

Honorable Mention:

Randy Ulmer
Dan Evans

1 Cameron Hanes
1 Randy Ulmer
1 Fred Eichler
4 Ted Nugent
I would say that that my top 3 are in a tie for first... and uncle ted it 4th...

Why would anyone say these guys....
Anthony Dixon
Shawn Monsen
these guys and the whole FMP crew are some of the worst ethical hunters i have ever seen... i will admit that they put animals on the ground but they take horrible shots at far ranges and get lucky.... they are the kind of people that give archery hunters horrible names..... if they were such good hunters as they claim they are they would stalk the animals they shoot at to a distance where they can hit them in the vitals and not where they hit them in the neck or the back of the head....

There alot of people that could be considered Hardcore. Fact is there are alot of great harcore hunters. My list would be as follows,
Fred Bear
Glenn St. Charles
Paul Schafer
There are so many more that you could list. Howard Hill could probably out shoot many of the top compound guys today. The three guys listed here invented hardcore bowhunting. DIY guys that were doing it long before almost all the guys today were even born. They did it with traditional gear and not compounds. People dont think about it but Glenn St. Charles is the one that got Fred Bear to go to Alaska. These are just a few of the guys on my list.

Fred Bear

Larry D Jones

Dwight Shue

Government doesn't fix anything and has spent trillions proving it!!!
Let's face it...After Monday and Tuesday, even the calender says WTF!

Old post but this guy nailed it.
Paul Shafer....man I'd love to have his hunts all on video!

Monster Muleys very own Buglin Billy is the best bow hunter I have ever personally known. Maybe not in the business but he doesn't have to take a back seat to anyone. And a real class guy to boot.

Don't forget Monster Muleys own ADDICT as well. Did you guys watch the ibex video?

I'm a big fan of Tim Wells, also.

Lots of others, Fred Eichler and his ability to get excited no matter what he kills is another.

I agree, Zac Griffith is a freaking stud.

LOL

The best ones aren't on TV, posting on Facebook constantly, they may write a magazine article now and then but they aren't the folks everyone here is mentioning.

Chuck Adams
Randy Ulmer
Fred Bear

Nate Simmons is an up and comer as a real salt of the earth, public land guy. Love what those guys are doing on the Western Hunter. No ranches, no guides, no scouting in their backyard all summer, just pick a good unit, grab the backpack and go!!!

Agree with many of the above candidates. On a little bit of a different angle, the best 'up and comer' that is not well known would be Nate Allred, in my opinion. He has been consistently killing big bucks on general archery tags on public land in heavy pressure areas. Still somehow manages to find and bag big bucks that are overlooked by all the other hunters in those areas. Here are a couple of his recent 200"+ bucks (if I can upload them).

Randy Ulmer and David Long

David Long's name wasn't mentioned a lot on this thread but the guy is a beast year after year!
