I've got a buddy trying to con my into buying an archery landowner tag with him this year, just wondering if anyone here has hunted it and what kind of success they had. Thanks!

The only Baca Ranch I know of, is now the Valles Caldera, and you cannot buy a permit. It's a raffle drawing.

I'm not real familiar with the unit. I know a lot of guys that did real well up there before the unit was split up, but have no personal knowledge of the area. Just down the page, there is a thread on this unit. Hope it helps.

Thanks! I was able to get a little info off that post even though it got highjacked off onto another subject. What I saw was not positive though, sounds like a lot of hunters and a ton of kaos. I better think about this one.

The Baca is awesome to look at, but the restof unit 6c does not fare so well. There are many tags in the public draw, and even more considering the landowner tags that are unit wide. There are quite a few elk in the area, but the big ones can be hard to get to. Not a bad bowhunt, but too many guys with rifles during the later hunts.

quickdrawdinker,

Ya, a few hunters on the roads. I buy a landowner tag almost every year I don't draw. Ya, hunting suck when driving the roads all day like about 80% of the people do. BUT, if you know where to hunt, it's all about holding off for a 6 point bull. I could have shot several smaller bulls last year. If you get in a good area away from the roads, then you have a better than average chance to bag a good bull. Every guys on this site that says this area sucks, WELL, they are for sure ROAD HUNTERS!!!! I saw a few gus last year going over deadfall, trying to drive down old logging roads. This pissed me off, due to the fact those old logging roads make for some excellent shooting lanes. So, much for hunting in a closed logging road, and have an ATV come down it to ruin your day. This happend to me last year. IF you couldn't already tell?
Private inbox me if you decide to go, maybe we can hook up down there??

The unit is nowhere near what it used to be. AND I am not a road hunter. A bull I killed there was almost 2 miles from the road. I don't even put in for any of the 6s anymore. TOO many people everywhere. ie Earth Muffins hiking for fun close to the base of Caballo, or the 500 dog walkers in Canada Bonita.

Is this Baca ranch of the Same Baca's with the rodeo company? Just curious. They've had some rank bulls through the years.

Txdeerslayer,

I don't think I ever said this area sucks... If I did it was unintentional. I was trying to establish the fact that four wheelers are everywhere, and they have access to most of the unit via old logging roads. Before I bought land in 6c I researched as to where I could be into the most elk and other critters. I live in a heck of a good spot, and see some fine bulls every year. I don't bowhunt it anymore due to the fact of the the amount of licenses and limited areas to get away from the roads. However, I do still take out a few friends. It's just not the same quality unit that it was 5 to 10 years ago. I love it when most hunters cruise the main roads, that means they aren't any threat to most of the elk. It's the four wheelers go everywhere, have no respect for private property, and even make their own roads that I try to get away from.

Take care,
