To anyone who drew, I was hoping my friend would draw but did not. We both have cow elk tags and will be on the refuge mid Dec. I would much rather help someone tag a bison then hunt elk so I would be happy to help you out!

If the bison are there I will find them and help you pack it out to!

Shoot me an email if you are interested!

Helluva offer! Makes me wish I had a tag!

I had to "settle" for a damned old sheep tag.

Good luck on your elk hunt too.
Zeke

Hey Bud,
I did draw a bison tag! I'm not afraid to take advantage of any help I can get. I hope to have it done by December but if not, I'm happy to hunt with you.

I am waiting for cow elk refuge info to come out then I will pick a hunt and apply. I will be in touch.

LAST EDITED ON Sep-28-15 AT 10:39AM (MST)[p]If anyone wants bison help (on the elk refuge) 12/15-12/18 let me know, I will be there hunting cow elk and I would rather help you get a bison (bull or cow) and even help pack out. My buddy and I were hoping he would draw bison but he did not - and I want to be "in" on a bison hunt so email me at [email protected] if you are interested!

I got a cow in 2014 and saw lots of bison and hiked the entire area.

Again I am there 12/14-12/19 and happy to help hunt, pack, or if you need a place to stay we will be at the antler inn.

Harvested my bull 10-08-15 on National Forest land with the son-in-law and two of my grandsons. One of the most memorable hunts I can think of!

To top it off he's a giant!

You did great __77

I got mine in September and those earlier month hunts with no snow are truly a hunt!!

Good to share with the GK as they will never forget it.

congrats

I just got back yesterday - no bison on refuge. I heard about state land and it is open - but they hung out 200 yards away a lot, one guy passed a calf on it.

I did cut a set of tracks from 2 medium size bison on the north end - I have no idea where they went (heading NE on ridge parallel with road to Kelly). I spoke to no one else who knew of any bison on refuge so my guess is they left.

Snow in forcast so hopefully but it is not looking good for next week.

I helped my buddy trying to get his first elk most of the time and on the last day stalked into a herd of 500 in the wide open from a mile away (took 2 hours) and took the lead cow with a perfect shot with my muzzleloader at 100 yards. It was awesome.

LAST EDITED ON Dec-20-15 AT 12:33PM (MST)[p]It sounds like the weather they have had out there recently still hasn't been severe enough to move them down onto the refuge. Last year it was really snowy and very cold by the first part of December and brought all the sheep, elk, moose, and Bison down into the valley from what my buddy said and he got his big Bison bull a lot earlier in December.

It should happen any day, i shot mine last year on January 2nd. Out a herd of about 400. Hey Don,i need to talk to you about your'e hunt. Thanks...

It is night and day from last year, last year way above average this year way below. Middle of my hunt they said there were 1/4 the elk they normally have (not 1/4 last years numbers).

Look into new state land for bison! oilcan how have you been????

Hey Don, i'm headed out on a combo goose, pheasant, cow elk hunt, for a few days. I will contact you when i get back. Merry Christmas..

I arrive Friday hopefully the hunt is not closed, might have closed yesterday!!! Anyone else going to be there?

My buddy just got the news, hunt is officially shut down this friday 1/6 the day were were going to fly in.

Ouch! Stinks!

They stopped the hunt today, the day we were set to fly in so we did not get to hunt. I feel for any bull hunters who missed out. Likely never get another chance.

Just curious as to why the hunt was stopped? I didn't see the news or article about it. Was it due to the tough weather conditions, or is more of a harvest objective type hunt? Sorry to those hunters who did not get an opportunity to fill their tags, but hopefully this was a decision made to support the well-being of the animals.
Thanks

LAST EDITED ON Jan-07-17 AT 08:22PM (MST)[p]>Once they start the feeding program
>on the refuge the hunts
>are over

To add to that comment, the biologists do regular studies on the NER and this year the forage was not sufficient to allow the animals to go any longer without starting the feeding program. Last year I believe they extended the season until late January to try and met objectives. They run the program very well and want hunters to take the number of animals in their objective every year and do their best to help them do that. Sometimes it just doesn't work out that way and this year was one of those where they had to look at the overall good of all the animals using the grounds.

Any bull hunters who did not fill only have themselves to blame.

The rain followed by wet snow and bitter cold put a "cap" on the forage so the elk were having a hard time. Got my cow bison the 2nd. refunds may be due to some who could not hunt. Bull tags will be reduced next season due to too many accidental take bulls this year.
They had allowed the season to run until Jan. 31 if conditions warranted, but the elk feeding had to start early. Saw some bomber bull elk on the refuge.

Refunds? Doubt it, anyone who had a tag and could read knew the Refuge could be closed anytime the elk feeding started.

G&F has already issued statement on refunds, they should go out to those who did not have a chance to hunt due to closure.

Any bull hunters who did not fill out have themselves to blame, true for most. However as a NR I would have picked the last time slot - hunt has never closed early. I am basically retired so I would have changed my schedule and went BUT many guys have jobs, vacation etc and can not.

Anticipating a closure that has never happened is not something even I plan for (and I plan like crazy). Picking the "best" time slot is. last is best.

I completely understand why they did this - but also feel for my friend who does not get to go, vacation wasted, training (exercise), shooting, hoping, dreaming, researching, studying ID's, packing, etc.

Hopefully he draws next year.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-24-17 AT 10:13AM (MST)[p]The better option would be to give them a tag in 2017 like they did with those Wyoming sheep hunters during the fire year.

Serious? They missed 10 days out of a 150 day season. You don't have to wait until they are on the refuge. Plenty of buff on the forest all season long for people that want to hunt them.
Proclamation mentions possible 48 hour closure. Good luck with that one?

Article says they "may" qualify. Never have seen them do this. They have given people the choice in sheep areas to get tags the following year when fires were causing issues; had to be done before the season opened.

Yes national forest! nonresident, most of that is wilderness. Again how many of you guys saying anyone who did not make it can change there schedule to hunt over 1,000 miles away, on 1-2 weeks notice, around xmas and new years?

I can but most cant!

Forest is not wilderness where the Buffalo are. Most people that have a once in a lifetime Buffalo permit should have a contingency plan. In the last several years excluding this year. The best hunting was Thanksgiving thru New Years. If your only planning on hunting the refuge you are limiting your options. October and November are awesome on the forest.
Just sayin?

Willy is right, there is no wilderness where buffalo are hunted off the Park; it's all NF.

There should be NO any(bull) tags offered a refund. Those hunters had from Aug 15 thru Jan to bull hunt. I killed both my bulls in October and have been on Oct & Nov hunts with others and everyone killed their bulls no problem.

Cow tags may be a different story, although the literature that comes with tags warns about early closure of Refuge. Not my call though, up to G&F to refund.
